Title: Mounting a Handgun In My Car? Yes or No
Post by: sigluvr on September 15, 2007, 08:17:23 PM
Mounting a Handgun In My Car?
That is my Conundrum.  What do you all think.  I once thought that would be a good idea but lately I have begun to question my own desire to do this.  I have a holster system that will allow me to attach a receptacle to my cars interior for the holster to fasten into.  Then I can attach the entire system into my car and have it at arms reach.  Easy, right?  Right.

BUT . . . is that smart?  That is the question.  It is NOT, "to be or not to be. . . !"

Now what do all of you think?  Should I fasten a holster in my car at arms reach so I can retrive it if I need it, or is this a bad idea?  Like. . .  what happens if my car gets stolen?  Right, or if  . . . Ohh I don't know, that's why I'm asking all of you.

I need feedback from you.   ???

I think it's not a bad Idea personally.

The only way I'd do it is if was a double retention holster for my EDC because it's coming with me when I get out.

Personally I've been trying to figure out how to modify my dash so I could push a button and a trap door drops down for access for a pistol.  (see Big Sleep http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038355/ (http://Big Sleep http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038355/))

Depends on your state law for one. If legal I would do it. In Ohio if the gun is not in a holster on your person,

(E) No person who has been issued a license or temporary emergency license to carry a concealed handgun under section 2923.125 or 2923.1213 of the Revised Code shall do any of the following:

(1) Knowingly transport or have a loaded handgun in a motor vehicle unless one of the following applies:

(a) The loaded handgun is in a holster on the person’s person .

(b) The loaded handgun is in a closed case, bag, box, or other container that is in plain sight and that has a lid, a cover, or a closing mechanism with a zipper, snap, or buckle, which lid, cover, or closing mechanism must be opened for a person to gain access to the handgun.

(c) The loaded handgun is securely encased by being stored in a closed, locked glove compartment or in a case that is locked.

Sucks.

I cannot believe someone else has seen that! If memory serves they have a similar rig on 77 Sunset Strip ( on the American Classic Channel)

Best regards,

I'm not sure I understand why you would mount it unless you are affected by state law. On the seat next to you seems pretty good too.
If you can carry, I would definitely not leave the gun in the car unless you have to go into a restricted area. One of those single handgun safes with bio or pushbutton locks might be a nice idea. They might steal the gun but still can't use it.

I should tell you more.  I live in Oklahoma.  Our laws are pro gun owner so this helps.  In some states when you leave your car while carrying a handgun with it not in a holster, you would have to either carry it in your hand with you or lock it in a gun safe in you car or trunk.  I always carry it on my belt in a holster.  With the system I am thinling about when I would leave my car I would just take it out of the holster that I have mounted in my car and then transfer it to the holster on my person.

I might just use this in the rare case when I would run down to the corner store for a loaf of bead, get gas or something like that or I woud not have my pants on, just some sweat pants on, etc.  If I don't have my holster with me on my belt, then I don't know what I would do because there would always be the possibility of my car getting stolen with my gun still inside . . . NOT good.

Now, does this help any more?

DakotaRanger, check out http://www.hiddensafes.com/.  They're here in Memphis, and they can (and often do) mount
compartments in cars.

Great site.  I might use one of theirs for my own house.  I didn't know this existed.   I THANK YOU for pointintg this out to me.

Now....What I have is from Eagle Industries.  http://www.eagleindustries.com (http://http:www.eagleindustries.com)

They have a holster system that with a little inginuity a person can use anywhere.  In some of their old ads, they show a women sitting at her desk with this holster system attached UNDER her desk.  Now that's what got me thinking, why not use it in my car instead of a desk.  SO, I bought the plate onto which the holster will fit with your gun inside of it.  I envisiosned being able to attach this mounting plate to the hump of my car next to my right leg and calf.  This is what I have now only I haven't attached it to my car yet.

If you visit Eagle Industries web page I think you'll see what I am thinking of.  I don't want to make a big deal out of this but a person could holster a gun in your car concealed along with one on your person at the same time.

Let's say you are getting gasoline for your car and you are inside paying your gas bill while you have a handgun concealed on your person AND another one in your car attached to the hump of your transmission.  One problem I can forsee is if while I'm inside paying my bill for gas and goodies, someone jumps in my car at the gas pump and steals my car.  They would not only get my car but then they'd also have one of my handguns . . . RIGHT?  So,  . . . maybe this could be a good idea or a bad idea.  But so far this is the only scenrio I can think of that would turn out bad.

So far, I appreciate everyone's input.  I really do.  Keep it up please.

Storage in a safe for your car makes sense. Carry off body in you car can create problems.
Control- You step out to pump gas and others are in the car. You step out to talk to the friendly police office. Anytime you are not in control of the gun it could become a problem.
Accident- You are involved in an accident and the gun goes flying (even mounted thing happen to fly in an accident) and you need the gun it could be un-reachable.

Here, try this one, it should work.  http://www.eagleindustries.com/ (http://www.eagleindustries.com/)

The one I have is pictured here.  It's the RTI Wheel.  Then you select your holster to match your gun and attach the two together.

SOME STATES HAVE LAWS... THAT YOU MUST HAVE OR ABLE CONTROL YOUR FIREARMS/ IN PLAIN ENGLISH...
YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETELY CONTROL OF YOUR FIREARMS IN OR OUT CAR. AS WELL ON YOU.

Title: Re: Mounting a Handgun In My Car? Yes or No

Yes Mr. Farley, you are absolutely correct.  The more I think of it the less I like the idea except to have a holster in my car which I may use while driving. (more comfortable)  Then, when stepping out of my car I should take it with me on my person.  THEN, I will have "CONTROL" of it at all times.

Thanks to all who have replied to this.

As the FBI agents in Florida found out, laying your gun on the seat is a good way to get killed.

And, as Seattle's police chief found out, leaving your pistol in the car gets it stolen.

And as previously stated some states don't allow it, like WA state.   I have a CCP here and always keep it on my person, driving or not.  Many times I use a photo vest for driving and transfer to my IWB holster when dismounted.  ;D

Your state laws should be the determining factor, as others have noted. But if you decide to go with a mount, here is one might be worth looking at.

I've got no connection to them, just found them when I was doing my search for a car mount.

No, unless the handgun goes with you, when you leave the car.

I wouldn't. It would be too easy to forget and drive into a no gun zone, like a school. The last thing you want is to get in legal trouble because you forgot you had a gun in your car.

I'm ready to mount a holster in the console of my minivan. My dad suggested using velcro and a holster. I'm thinking about using one of those Grassburr rigs. Anybody got any other suggestions??

my dad rigged up something in my console to mount my old Bianchi model 6 IWB holster in there. He bent and cut a piece of sheet metal to fit tight in the console, and to angle the holster to a position in which I can draw my gun (Taurus 617) easily, and still close and lock my console without removing and repositioning the gun. I'll take pics when I can.

What do you drive? My F-150 has nice deep trays at floor level inside the door. I just put m Glock in there if I'm going to be driving a while. All I have to do is lower my left hand hand. I keep a balled up T shirt in the front of the tray to keep it from sliding. I just reholster in the IWB, before getting out.

What he said about the FBI, and what FQ said (except for the door part just mount the holster because of the FBI thing). Because of the accident possibility I think mounting it is a good Idea, if want just re-holster on your person before exiting the vehicle. Be sure not to leave it in plane site inside your vehicle when your not in it. If you want to leave it in your vehicle get a separate secured lock box for storage when away from your vehicle.

I'd consider looking at doing two things....

....have a holster mounted for the times you're in the vehicle, at least a Level II like a Serpa...

...and have a safe bolted to the frame where you keep the gun when not in the vehicle.

Best of both worlds....  8)

However, I have been looking at mounting mine on the driver's door panel.  By putting it low and toward the front of the panel it is easily accessible with either hand.  The one on the link above is great for a left hand draw only and is slightly behind me ... I'm getting too old for such contortions  :-\
