Mounting a Handgun In My Car? Yes or No
« on: September 15, 2007, 08:17:23 PM »
Mounting a Handgun In My Car?That is my Conundrum.  What do you all think.  I once thought that would be a good idea but lately I have begun to question my own desire to do this.  I have a holster system that will allow me to attach a receptacle to my cars interior for the holster to fasten into.  Then I can attach the entire system into my car and have it at arms reach.  Easy, right?  Right.

BUT . . . is that smart?  That is the question.  It is NOT, "to be or not to be. . . !"

Now what do all of you think?  Should I fasten a holster in my car at arms reach so I can retrive it if I need it, or is this a bad idea?  Like. . .  what happens if my car gets stolen?  Right, or if  . . . Ohh I don't know, that's why I'm asking all of you.

I need feedback from you.   ???

I think it's not a bad Idea personally.

The only way I'd do it is if was a double retention holster for my EDC because it's coming with me when I get out.

Personally I've been trying to figure out how to modify my dash so I could push a button and a trap door drops down for access for a pistol.  (see Big Sleep http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038355/)

Depends on your state law for one. If legal I would do it. In Ohio if the gun is not in a holster on your person,

(E) No person who has been issued a license or temporary emergency license to carry a concealed handgun under section 2923.125 or 2923.1213 of the Revised Code shall do any of the following:

(1) Knowingly transport or have a loaded handgun in a motor vehicle unless one of the following applies:

(a) The loaded handgun is in a holster on the person’s person .

(b) The loaded handgun is in a closed case, bag, box, or other container that is in plain sight and that has a lid, a cover, or a closing mechanism with a zipper, snap, or buckle, which lid, cover, or closing mechanism must be opened for a person to gain access to the handgun.

(c) The loaded handgun is securely encased by being stored in a closed, locked glove compartment or in a case that is locked.

Sucks.

I cannot believe someone else has seen that! If memory serves they have a similar rig on 77 Sunset Strip ( on the American Classic Channel)

I'm not sure I understand why you would mount it unless you are affected by state law. On the seat next to you seems pretty good too.
If you can carry, I would definitely not leave the gun in the car unless you have to go into a restricted area. One of those single handgun safes with bio or pushbutton locks might be a nice idea. They might steal the gun but still can't use it.

I should tell you more.  I live in Oklahoma.  Our laws are pro gun owner so this helps.  In some states when you leave your car while carrying a handgun with it not in a holster, you would have to either carry it in your hand with you or lock it in a gun safe in you car or trunk.  I always carry it on my belt in a holster.  With the system I am thinling about when I would leave my car I would just take it out of the holster that I have mounted in my car and then transfer it to the holster on my person.

I might just use this in the rare case when I would run down to the corner store for a loaf of bead, get gas or something like that or I woud not have my pants on, just some sweat pants on, etc.  If I don't have my holster with me on my belt, then I don't know what I would do because there would always be the possibility of my car getting stolen with my gun still inside . . . NOT good.

Now, does this help any more?

DakotaRanger, check out http://www.hiddensafes.com/.  They're here in Memphis, and they can (and often do) mount
compartments in cars.

Great site.  I might use one of theirs for my own house.  I didn't know this existed.   I THANK YOU for pointintg this out to me.

Now....What I have is from Eagle Industries.  http://www.eagleindustries.com

They have a holster system that with a little inginuity a person can use anywhere.  In some of their old ads, they show a women sitting at her desk with this holster system attached UNDER her desk.  Now that's what got me thinking, why not use it in my car instead of a desk.  SO, I bought the plate onto which the holster will fit with your gun inside of it.  I envisiosned being able to attach this mounting plate to the hump of my car next to my right leg and calf.  This is what I have now only I haven't attached it to my car yet.

If you visit Eagle Industries web page I think you'll see what I am thinking of.  I don't want to make a big deal out of this but a person could holster a gun in your car concealed along with one on your person at the same time.

Let's say you are getting gasoline for your car and you are inside paying your gas bill while you have a handgun concealed on your person AND another one in your car attached to the hump of your transmission.  One problem I can forsee is if while I'm inside paying my bill for gas and goodies, someone jumps in my car at the gas pump and steals my car.  They would not only get my car but then they'd also have one of my handguns . . . RIGHT?  So,  . . . maybe this could be a good idea or a bad idea.  But so far this is the only scenrio I can think of that would turn out bad.

So far, I appreciate everyone's input.  I really do.  Keep it up please.
