Title: GPS System Could Fail Next Year

Mismanagement and underinvestment by the U.S. Air Force could possibly lead to the failure and blackout of the Global Positioning System (GPS), a federal watchdog agency says.

The risk of failure starts in 2010, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) report quoted by PC World.

The failure would impact not only military operations, but also the millions of people and businesses who rely on the satellite-based navigation systems built into cars, boats and cell phones.

"If the Air Force does not meet its schedule goals for development of GPS IIIA satellites, there will be an increased likelihood that in 2010, as old satellites begin to fail, the overall GPS constellation will fall below the number of satellites required to provide the level of GPS service that the U.S. government commits to," the GAO report states.

The report says the Air Force has struggled to build successful GPS satellites within cost and on schedule.

Good thing I learned how to use a compass and map in the Boy Scouts.

I remember, when I was in the Navy, the looks of confusion on the faces of new Ensigns when the Quarter Masters were showing them how to use charts and a plotting table. That was when the most advanced electronic guidence was inertia guidence. I wonder if basic seamanship is still taught in the age of GPS?

So instead of hearing that sweet voice from my dash tell me to "turn right in 3/8 of a mile", she'll be asking me, "where the hell are we?!?"?

I've been a firm believer that GPS is optional for the average citizen and much of LE and emergency support.  However, we have been sold on the technology  :'(

I am one that does my best to stay with the basic skills and limited technology.  I like to be able to find north without a compass as well.  However, we have been sold such a good of bills that it is hard to find maps of lakes and some parks that have landmarks and decent topo.  Everything is going GPS readings  >:(  We are going to be our own undoing  :'(

I honestly hope that this turns into another Y2K thing, but how often can we rely on that?

Seriously though....I don't need GPS, I've always known exactly where I am at all times.

I'm right here!
Never been lost and when I go over there, I know that too.  Unless you turn off the lights then I might need a flashlight or torch as PhilW calls them but then I know where I am again.  Sometimes when I drank, I would forget where I was but that was temporary and the next morning I would make some strange woman breakfast and remember that I was right where I was supposed to be again.....

Simple.....unless of course I was smoking the ganja and then it would get a little hazy but it was OK because I didn't really care where I was anyway...then some woman would make me breakfast and it was all good once again.....

gee. how ever did we get around before gps? I doubt the gov. will let these satellites fail, way too much equipment that relies on this system. probably just another wat for the media to scare the soccer moms that can't find their way without gps and get people pissed at our military.

Just turn on the big-screen TV and grab a cold beer from the fridge.  I've spent so much time in that corner that I spruced it up a bit.  M'ette once told me that if she sent me to the corner everytime I deserved it I'd be getting my mail delivered there.   ;D

I'm with y'all on that one. I got a damn good'un, too. I spent over a month in the ICU and she never left hospital until the last day I was there. Then the only reason she left was to take her vehicle home so she could ride home in the ambulance with me. My parents brought her back to the hospital and she was gone less than an hour. Then for the next 2 1/2 months, she slept on the couch next to my hospital-style bed that was set up in the den. She said she wasn't going back to our bed until I could go too.

No doubt.

There are a FEW, and I mean a FEW, that continue the age old, tried and true method of celestial navigation, kinda like a compass and Boy Scouts, but far more accurate.

Sailors, scouts, mountain men, Indians, Marines, Seals, etc,... (lowly Florida boys, who were taught by old men), can take a watch, compass, and a clear view of the sky and literally find a COG (course over ground), about as good as a GPS.

It saved my butt in the Everglades after breaking down in a 16' Jon Boat and finally getting it running after filtering fuel with a T-shirt. Point being it was after dark, and flat, no landmarks, and turned around six ways from Sunday. The constellation Orion is in direct line with the Little Dipper, which rises in the South in Florida Summer's.

Damn that Farmer's Almanac, and Navy Veteran Grandfather's. God Bless Em' Both.

I've installed too many Nav systems on boats and asked Captain's what would you do if this and your redundant failed?

Too many times I've heard called the Coast Guard.

That is an option for those who haven't studied enough.

Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks anymore.  ;D Tried teaching my boys about astronomy. Went over like a turd in a punch bowl. They just weren't interested. Video games have killed any chance of having and utilizing their imagination. They can shoot their ass off and fish with the best of them but are brain dead when it comes to common sense, lol.  ::)

Sorry Ping but I HATE Starbucks, every year my sister sends me a pound of their coffee, the first year I tried drank, every year since I have rewrapped it and given it to someone else as it tastes like crap, and if you remember the "Coffee" thread I'm not that fussy about my brew.
As for astronomy , I was never real interested in it, I just learned a couple for navigation.

All you have to remember is to always go THAT way! But when you see a lot of people going THIS way, you may need to turn around... It's a one-way street. ;D

The part that bothers me the most about the thought of GPS sats failing is there are going to be a lot of people following me around. I seem to have a insanely great sense of direction... Magnetic boogers and all.

Astronomy rocks. Love the clear nights where most of the sky can be observed.

That is a huge benefit of living out in the country. After so many years of living in the city, I still remember the first night on the ranch, watching the stars, seeing the Milky Way. Re-started my interest in astronomy at that point. Didn't get far - running (and working) a ranch makes you tired at night! A night sky so dense with stars that finding the Big Dipper was hard at first with so many stars visible.

Best reaction was my son, though. He took the bus from Chicago out to a small town near us. I picked him up about 9 at night, winter, and five miles south of the freeway, I pulled over and told him to get out, I wanted to show him something. When the last car door closed, there was this moment of silence, then from the dark came "Oh, wow!"   ;D

he says the system will operate properly with only 15 satellites. how does he know this? he did some of the programming on some of these satellites. (he's the smart one in the family) anyway, he says, don't worry, it'll be just fine....

So I don't need the sextant I made from three pencils and rubber bands? ;D

yeah, probably not, but I'd keep it around anyway. for when N. Korea shoots them all out of the sky with their reliable missile program... or satellite rockets... you know...

Just store them in the man cave, uh, corner. We might need them later.

As for the cheez-whiz, I was busy at a wedding all day yesterday and didn't have time to go to the store......however, I do have leftover chicken wings, chips, dip and celery......no....scratch the chicken wings.....*burp*

Good for the GPS still working....we might need it to find our way out of the darkest reaches of the cave, er, corner.....   ;D

I disappointed about the GPS system, I WANTED to watch these dumb asses try to read a map while texting and applying eye make up.

I got the Cheez whizz, I hope you all like the Smoked Cheddar.  ;D

Yeah, but would you want watch a 2nd Lt. (I mean one of ours) try to call in artillery or air without it? Christ, it would save the tax payers money to just have the platoon play catch with their grenades. :-\

When I used to navigate my fishing boat in Prince William Sound, I used my GPS quite a bit, but always, and I mean ALWAYS doublechecked my navigational maps. ALWAYS.
