MANSFIELD (CBS 11 News) ―
Is it okay to show your patriotism at the office?
For one Arlington woman, the answer was "no" after she hung an American flag in her office just before the Memorial Day weekend.
Debbie McLucas is one of four hospital supervisors at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield. Last week, she hung a three-by-five foot American flag in the office she shares with the other supervisors.
When McLucas came to work Friday, her boss told her another supervisor had found her flag offensive. "I was just totally speechless. I was like, 'You're kidding me,'" McLucas said.
McLucas' husband and sons are former military men. Her daughter is currently serving in Iraq as a combat medic.
Stifling a cry, McLucas said, "I just wonder if all those young men and women over there are really doing this for nothing."
McLucas said the supervisor who complained has been in the United States for 14 years and is formerly from Africa. McLucas said that supervisor took down the flag herself.
"The flag and the pole had been placed on the floor," McLucas said. But McLucas also said hospital higher-ups had told her some patients' families and visitors had also complained.
"I was told it wouldn't matter if it was only one person," she said. "It would have to come down."
McLucas said hospital bosses told her as far as patriotism was concerned, the flag flying outside the hospital building would have to suffice.
"I find it very frightening because if I can't display my flag," McLucas asked, "whatother freedoms will I lose before all is said and done?"
Kindred Healthcare's corporate headquarters are located in Kentucky. We called them for comment when we were first working on this story Tuesday, but they did not return our calls.
Wednesday morning, however, our story received nationwide attention. We have received hundreds of emails and comments from people who had something to say about it.
Among the supporters was a combat medic in Iraq: Debbie McLucas' daughter, Lillian McLucas Dressig. "My mom is a true hero in my book," she said.
It was midnight in Iraq when she spoke to CBS 11. Talking about the stand her mother took which could have cost her job, Lillian said, "If it's the right thing to do, it's the right thing to do. And, I think we need more people to stand up for what's right in America."
Several dozen people protested outside the Mansfield hospital Wednesday. And a receptionist at Kindred's headquarters told us they received many phone calls.
Then, late Wednesday morning, Kindred posted on its website a statement about the incident. It reads, in part: "The disagreement was over the size of the flag and not what it symbolized. We have invited the employee to put the flag back up."
We talked to McLucas Wednesday afternoon. She says the hospital's local CEO called and apologized. And McLucas says the woman did tell her she could put the flag back up, which she has done.
But she says when she was first told the flag had to go, nobody mentioned anything about its size being the root of the problem.
"At no point was I afforded the opportunity -- [no one said,] 'Hey Deb, could you get a one and a half by three and a half and hang it instead of hanging this three by five?'" McLucas said.
Even so, McLucas says she's happy people have spoken out about the issue. "It's just restored my faith in the American people," she said.

I wonder if that 'Supervisor from Africa' is from Kenya. Seems like it would fit ;) .

Anyone who would be offended by OUR flag in OUR Country should get the hell out! If I were in anyone else's country, I should have no right to be offended by their flag in their country. Why do we let outsiders decide what happens in our Country? Let's switch back to the "Don't Tread On Me" flag and kick the U.N. out of New York as a symbol of how we won't stand for this anymore.
I'll bet they don't show the film, "The Man Without a Country", in schools anymore.

If you can't display the US Flag in the US there is something SERIOUSLY WRONG!
I don't give a flying rats ass if you're 'offended', whether you're a citizen or not! In my world the US Flag may be properly displayed anywhere on US soil.
If you're offened you can leave. If it is 'against policy' then you just lost your company! (Yes, TAB I would have the state confiscate the company and all of it's holdings and GIVE it to a patroit!). The person that complained would be deported to the country of their choice.
Boarders, Language, Culture. We MUST take them back!

Abso freakin lutely!!!!!!! The last gun show I went to I passed up buying spare parts for my AR (even though they are nearly impossible to find) to buy one of these flags! I now have 2 count them TWO 3' X 5' flags hanging in my office. The first is old glory and the other is my brand new gadsdon flag. Since then I have had one complaint, and I've lost track of the agreeable folk. So I am with you!
But here is where I think the problem lies with these bellyachers: They don't understand, if they know or even care about our history and what these flags stand for. They have been brainwashed to believe that these are symbols of oppression! Well toss a bullshit flag on that call! Most of the so-called free world is free because we either made them, or kept them free. The day someone tells me that I cannot fly the AMERICAN flag on AMERICAN soil is the day I start the march! >:( >:( >:(
AAAAARRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!! Not angry enough
-
I can't fly the American flag?!? Kiss my fat, American ass!!!

>:( I could say that this ticks me off, but that would be like saying that fire is a little bit warm. They are unpatriotic, %*$#'n, #$%*ers, that make my beloved home state look bad. They rolled over rather quickly when confronted, but if I have my way, we true, red blooded Kentuckians will send these *%^&ers packing. Maybe they can find a more agreeable lot in Kalifornia.

I can't think of any words that haven't already been posted in the replys to express the anger I feel about the hospitals original stance on this and the BS excuse they're using to try to cover their A$$. There isn't an excuse big enough to cover it.

Glad people protested. Sickens me to think these immigrants that come to our Nation want to impose their ideology and their own nation's points of view on us. Sorry, this is America. Our America and they can all head back to their original countries and fly their own flag. 8)

Exactly! If they love their country so much, why come to ours and make waves? If you don't like us, our flag, or our heritage... stay the heck out!

If their original country was so great why are they HERE. The fact is they feel justifiably inferior because their country of origin sucks so bad.

I agree with all the posts it infuriates me when the few win out over the majority. If you don't like our country or flag leave.

Does anyone know where I can get a good quality Gadsden (Don't Tread On Me flag? I can find them on the net, but I would like to hear from any one that has purchased from one of the many companies on the net as to the quality of what you got and from where. Needs to be made in America. Thank you.

As a follow up to every thing that took place, if this had happened to me, I would want a written explanation of the complaints, how they match company policy, and why what I did was wrong. I would next ask that this incident not be removed from my personnel file, but that the entire outcome be included in the report (to #1 remind everyone with selective memories what the outcome was, and #2 as evidence that I was the one wronged in this situation).
Do you suppose she would get in trouble if she rehung the flag and posted a sign under it that stated "If you have a problem with me (the flag) follow these directions to the nearest boarder ... and don't let the gate hit you in the ass on the way out!"

Probably, but she should do it anyway.
Then we have our own "citizens", like FQ whining that we should not treat those poor terrorists so harshly. Wheres that puking smilie ? (http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/puke.gif)

Does anyone know if the Gadsden is owned by anyone, or is it public domain. I'd sure like to silkscreen some up.
-
I'm not a lawyer, but I think it is public domain. It's been around since the war of independence. The first one.

Thanks. It will make a great T-shirt.

Ok I understand them not wanting some one to fly a 3'x 5' flag indoors, that is a little big. what I don't understand is how they would care if some one complains about an american flag( of reasonable size) being flown.

TAB,
A 3' x 5' flag on a standard standing upright is a standard indoor flag. They are in classrooms, churches, lobbies and offices all over the Country. It stands nearly 7' tall, but takes up no more than one square foot off floor space. When our local schools took out these larger flags* and replaced them with the small flags that hang from a standard at a 45 degree angle from a wall bracket many complained about the "distraction" the new smaller flags caused.
* Larger flags were removed out of respect due to their age and showing wear and fading. Smaller flags and standards were chosen as a cost issue and to make floor cleaning easier for custodians.

That's according to the company - after they got a veritable shit-storm of complaints and calls, emails and faxes.
Make 'em back down every damn time.
Anyone have a number of that HOA giving the Marine crap over his bumper stickers?

Whoever took the flag down and LAID IT ON THE GROUND deserves a good ass-kicking. >:( I'm sure some local vets there could handle the job.
