Title: What's your favorite caliber?
Post by: Badgersmilk on June 20, 2009, 02:52:53 PM
List any caliber (.380ACP, 9mm, .45ACP, .300 Win. mag., 105mm) if what you wish isn't shown.  But, please consider the many applications this round will need to fill.

Politics what they are...  A day may well come when you really have to say.  "I can only take one with me!"

Try not to let action type, or what's currently in your posession influence.  Just practicality of the round itsself.

"Is this at least acceptable for me to hunt small game, deer, other food sources with?"

"Can it stop a preditor / prowler / thief, and defend my life and family?"

"If the need to conceal the weapon arises can I hide some type of weapon capable of firing this round?"  (may be issues with 105mm)

Based on the above criteria.

.357 Magnum....big enough and can be carried in a revolver or a carbine (my next purchase).  Proven to be more than enough for defense and can take down most game found in North America.

Let me pull .223 off there (I like to think it would get very few votes), and add "Magnum pistol calibers .357 & .44".

I have to say Badger you need to specify a bit more as to what you have in mind.
Takng the queston as written, as far as one gun, I don't think anyone will argue with me when I say the 12 gauge pump in either Remington or Mossberg/Maverick is always the answer. Anything from doves to Elk, or zombies, it will do the job. Ammo and spare parts are ubiquitous. It may not be the only gun you ever want, but its the only gun you'll ever need.

What I have in mind would be.  All the guns you own are gone.  Were you only to be able to choose one caliber as a replacement, what would it be?

I went with a 12 Ga. Easy choice. Plenty of power, and with todays fine choices of slugs you can take fur or feathers by just switching ammo. You can't do that with any rifle or handgun. If I could have only one it would be a 12.  Bill T.

12 ga. is a great choice...  What could sway me would be options something like in the picture.  The old Tommy guns did well with .45ACP rounds as well!  Short on range though.  No need to change ammo with .44 mag.

Hard to hide a 12 ga but for the balance of the equation it fits quite well and I have one with plenty of shells available.

I can still stash a heck of a lot more .357 and .38 ammo in a smaller package.  I'm sticking with my original choice.

And hard on the ducks and rabbits. ;D Plus, there is the spare parts and ammo thing I mentioned earlier. A remington .870 or mossberg, even in TEOTWAWKI, I'll still find them in every town in America.

Had to jump on the 12g bandwagon.  It does everything, in my opinion, defensive, offensive, hunting, stand-off.  And with so many ammunition varieties around it can fill most roles needed.  If I new what task lay before me I might choose a different option, but is someone woke me up in the middle of the night and said we have to get the hell outta here, the tactical 12g is what I'd grab.  Others may be better at their specific task, but if I could just have one, your 12g is the best bet.  Now if I had to choose which 12g round I would only carry, that's hard one. ;D

I've got both, but If I could only have one it would be the .357, kind of hard to conceal a 12 ga. And as Tim pointed out, more ammo in less weight and space.

My question is, why .357 over another pistol caliber?  If you could just carry one, why not go with .45 ACP or auto loading round, just for arguments sake. ;D

Doesn't have the range that you get with .357 mag or the versitility of switching down to 38's.

I choose 12 Ga as the "all hells broken out and zombies are afoot" gun. In a scenario where I may have to occasionally blend in with the populace, I'll take a 4inch .357. It is probably the most versatile gun out there. It makes a good defense gun and is powerful enough to also take deer-sized game. The Smith 619 or 620 is Sheriff Jim Wilson's choice for the same reason. 12 GA is good for when you absolutely have to stop someone's butt NOW!

The question is just to vague for a good answer.
Pistol vs rifle vs practical carry vs tactical.

For pistol I like 9mm for the varied flavors, 40 and 357sig for being a powerful round and higher cap than a good old 45.
Rifle I have strange taste, my Dad's old 25-06 Mauser.
I am in need of a 12g to round things out.

You know Steyr
I was initially irritated by the vaquness of the question. The best gun? For what? BUT, Tx Bryan put it best. If someone you trust shakes you awake at three am and says "SHTF, we gotta go, NOW!" what do you grab, knowing nothing more. That makes the game fun. Unfortunately, also predictable, because I have a closet full of specialized stuff. If I don't know....I'm all about the 12.

"Getting through "Katrina" style LEO/ military presence, The question was ALL purpose.", and "If someone you trust shakes you awake at three am and says "SHTF, we gotta go, NOW!"

DING, DING, DING!!!  EXACTLY RIGHT!

While I think I'm sticking with .44 mag....  I know a 12 gauge pump with a folding / collapsable stock, and short barrel can be pretty well hidden!

.44 mag.  No worry about having to carry different types of rounds, or "do I have the right type loaded right this second for god knows what that may happen next?"...  And I can fit a BUNCH of ammo in a very small area to take with me.  There are all kinds of carbines and hand guns in the caliber.  & Recoil isnt NEARLY what "Dirty Harry" would lead you to believe!  Lets not forget, wheel guns dont leave evidence laying on the ground (casings)!  And should ammo become hard to get...  You can reload .44 mag really easily with even a Lee hand loader.

Lord Humungus knew what he was doing!

I much prefer the new avatar! ;D BUT where in the frilly heck are you going to find 16 gauge ammo? Granted it is probably the best wingshooting cartridge ever built, but....16 gauge? You're more likely to find a virgin at UCLA. Seriously, why not .327 mag, or .45 GAP or for that matter .600 NE?

The only problem with that is that I had one on my Moss 500, yes it would fit under a long jacket, but I absolutely HATED it, so I put the wood stock back on.

Hidden, its the G26. I can make that dissapear anywhere, and I suppose kill game if I have to. In reality, I've got that on the night stand and the 12 under the bed. In any realistic scenario, one's in my pocket, the others' over my shoulder, in a lot less time than it took to type this.

"You should not have a favorite weapon, or any other exaggerated preference for that matter. To become overly attached to one weapon is as bad as not knowing it sufficiently well. You should not imitate others, but use those weapons which suit you, and which you can handle properly. It is bad for both commanders and troopers to entertain likes and dislikes. Pragmatic thinking is essential. These are things you must learn thoroughly."

The Earth Book
Miyamoto Musashi - go rin no sho (The Book of Five Rings)

A 12ga is short-ranged with heavy recoil, heavy bulky ammunition and much of it's so-called versatility is little more than hype from various weapon and ammunition manufacturers. Each of the calibers listed have advantages and disadvantages as do the weapons that fire them. There is no such thing as the perfect weapon, nor a perfect caliber and pretending otherwise is a waste of time and effort. You can either pick the best weapon available to do the job you need to or use what you have to the best possible effect.

I choose ICBM. I know it is not on the list, but it is the end of all ends.  ;D There are some great choices on the list. It depends on the person and how well they can utilize what they have. There are people who can shoot some of these choices better than others. I know I can do some damage with a .22 Long Rifle. Others could not hit the broad side of a barn. But since I cannot make two choices on the poll I will do it here. And the winner is....... ???

Or in other words, love the one you're with. Good words of advice sir. I think that most of us could reach blindfolded into our closets/gun safes and come up with something more or less adequate to most situations. The key is learning to use all of them to best effect, .22 to .308 to .357 to 12 gauge. If  the question were changed fom "what would you take with zero prep or warning" to "what could you do with what you were randomley assigned", we could have a very useful discussion as well.

That said, what would you use if it had to service every situation?  And I would argue that its versatility is very useful and very real, while there is a lot of salesman talk to get some one to buy a certain buckshot over others, its no more than dozens of 'accu tips' and 'expansion controlling devices' on pistol and rifle rounds.  Which caliber here do you think has the greatest advantage as far as capabilities and delivery system in any foreseeable situation?

.357 magnum hands down for me.

Still the best single shot manstopper handgun round. All my years in healthcare I only saw one .357 wound and he didn't make it. The rest went to the morgue. I have seen survivors of .44 mags that went in and out. I've seen many shotgun wounds where the patient survived. I even had a patient that was shot 5 times with a 45 acp who walked away (granted he was young and strong and was with us for over 4 months and endured many surgeries and a lot of rehab). Any caliber can kill. I've seen deaths fron 22 cal. and one from a 25 cal.

.357 is easy to carry anywhere in a holster. Ammo is easy to carry. It's a good hunting round with 38 spl. for smaller game. More accurate and better range than a shotgun. A long barreled revolver is very accurate.

Easy personal choice for me, if I can only have one firearm.

OK here.  Ping, I think MANY would agree with you on .22lr...  Its added as an option.  ICBMS dont leave much meat for eating on small game or large...

True.  nobody should only train with one single weapon, or have knowledge of only one weapon...  Thats not the poll though.  If you only got one choice.  What are you using?  The whole safe is a little hard to carry and use all at the same time, and though you may have 100 guns to choose from, or none at all.  From your personal knowledge, which CALIBER is most practical IN YOUR OWN OPINION for all possible scenarios?  We know none are perfect.  Just which one would you choose?

TAB...  A 16 gauge???  :-\  I dont think you'll have to worry about anyone trying to steal your ammo so long as they know what it is anyway...  It's a valid choice!

Dont forget.  .44 mag is available in even factory loads at velocities as low as .45 ACP's, and you can fire anything from a 180 grain, to a 300 grain XTP hollow point at all kinds of velocities!  .44's are all about versatility.

Agreed that the .22lr is a good option but that still makes me think rifle over handgun for the most part (Ping were you thinking rifle?). If this is a bugout scenario with only one choice, I don't want to lug any rifle or shotgun around on an everyday basis. That's why I'm putting my .357 in a holster, grabbing all the ammo that I can carry and I'm heading for the hills.

Badgersmilk, you forced my hand... I would still go with the .22 Long Rifle. Anyone in my family can shoot it and they can become proficient without fear of recoil but also harvest meat for the table. As for home defense, I would leave it up to God whether my shot was true or not to fend of a bad guy/gal or more. Very versatile and "the bang" does not disturb the neighbors as much as other calibers. Beyond that, I would use my trusty recurve or compound bow.
But in reality, I carry my .45 ACP religiously, ,40 S&W as another choice along with one 9mm or .380, which I would rather use as a back up. Remington 870 shotguns as in close defense and one AR-15 as my intended medium range gun. Still shopping for the .308 or 30-06 to add to the collection for longer range purposes. Given my dilemma and inability to make a adequate decision. So, I will stick with the .22 Long Rifle.  ;)

Kid,  Hold on there soldier.  Nobody said we're necesarily bugging out anywhere!  BUT.  The possibility of you needing to conceal your weapon at a random time in the future is VERY GOOD no matter what may befall us.  You may only have to hide it from a passing vehicle, or you may be hiding it on your person as walk out the door while your home is searched by hand (questionable logic I grant you!).  But we wont know such details until such a day should come.

Ping, My aplause and respect to you for having enough sack to pick the .22!  I just picked up the G&A special edition called "complete book of rimfires" today.  As stated in the magazine, MANY people argree with your choice!

Have you ever seen the Henry 22lr. survival rifle? The barrel fits into the stock with room for ammo. The whole package is waterproof. Pretty cool at a very reasonable price.

The 12 GA has more versatility than some may think.

Tactical Shotgun Courses like those offered at Firearms Training Associates here in CA, or at Gunsite train to use shotguns out to decent medium range. Gunsite also has a tactical shotgun video that is great. Personally, I don't find the recoil to be so bad, even with full power slugs (especially with adrenaline), so in a situation that doesn't require concealment, it's the shotgun. Plus with ammo shortage, all I can find around here is shotgun shells. Walmarts in our PC area (the OC) don't carry handgun ammo.

Maybe there will be a situation where we don't have a choice. Maybe a dropped gun scenario.

While I dont agree with his .22 coment...  Its pretty darn funny!!!

"Now, while a .22LR is a great survival rifle, with its light weight and light inexpensive ammo, and compact size... If you find yourself about to be mauled by a bear, cougar, Lion, etc...  you might as well just throw it on the ground.  Option 2 would be to use it to take yourself out with a head shot and avoid the unpleasant experience of being semi-consciously disemboweled and eaten for lunch.  There are other scenarios, such as accidentally running across a not-so-legal alcohol producing operation, or marijuana farm, for example, where you might not get a warm welcome, and be forced to defend yourself.
SO... if you plan to go hiking, camping, or otherwise romping through the woods in an area that is potentially inhabited by predators, human or otherwise, may we suggest option 3:  Pack a larger caliber rifle.  Again, some people prefer a large caliber revolver such as a .44 or .357 as a survival gun, but if you choose to carry a weapon, a larger caliber survival rifle will not only protect you from predators, but will make life easier if you find yourself lost or stranded and need to kill game.   Keep in mind that with bigger caliber weapons, comes bigger heavier guns,  bigger heavier ammunition, and bigger heavier price tags.  Here are some choices for this category of survival rifle:"

Barrett M468 in 6.8SPC. (ok not on list)...

Always in a "only one" category, the 12g.  For concealment, I guess I would have to cut it down. If it gets to that point, having a "tiny 12g" that is illegal will be the least of my worries.

Yeah Kid, I have seen the Henry's Survival .22. Thought about getting a pair for my boys. I have a Glenfield Model 60 that my Dad gave me over 30 years ago. The tube magazine spring is getting worn and it had some issues ejecting. I need to give it some TLC. I have it ready for squirrel hunting. Great rifle and dialed in to perfection.

If I have to grab it in the middle of the night, stuffs coming down and I got to boog, My 16" CAR15 and my 870, and my Glock 17,  + whats in my pants at all times, a 5 shot S&W 9mm with 2 reloads, + the 649 body guard with 1 reload, because that is whats available at arms length, in my bedroom. The Car15 has a 2, 30 round mags attached, and an aimpoint comp m3, the 870 has a 7 rd tube and a 6 shot side saddle, shot and slugs, the glock has a 28 round magazine inserted and ready to go. Well the body guard has 5 + 1 speed loader, that is for my wife when I'm not home. I assume we are bugging out in the truck, Glock 21 with 2 mags in there. There is a 50 round bandoleer of 12 guage to go with the 870, mixed shot and slugs.

Now if I get 30 minutes or more to get ready, all of the above + the M1a, and loaded mags, takes 2 people to load the ammo box. + the spare mags and ammo for the Glock 21, I have used the .45 acp more than most for hunting, mostly with 185 semi wadcutters, quiet and excellent for rabbits and squirrels, I have harvested 2 deer with 230 grn slugs, again, quiet at a distance. Not to mention food and water, bug out bag etc...

A method I have used in a jungle walk with lots of targets, and unknown obstacles, was a bird bag for hunting, 3 bags, which originally were 2 for shotgun shells, and 1 big bag for birds, and it is rubberlined to prevent blood from bleeding through,  the big bag can hold 500 .357 easy, probably 200 .308 and 400 .223. For a lever action it would work perfectly. Rifle or pistol cartridges. I would say in .44, with all 3 bags, you could carry 500 rounds at your fingertip for loading.

I think the question is too broad, but as we go through it, maybe some cool stuff will come out.

You know, M25
I don't know whether to find you reassuring, or be very, very afraid of you. ;D Personally, I am sitting on my bed, within reach of a Glock 26 and a Maverick 12 20" barrel, 8 round tube security model, under the bed. In my closet I have a loaded Ruger M77 in .270 as well as a 10/22 and 100 rounds of ammo for each and there is a Glock 19, one Clinton 10 rd mag, in my truck's (gas tank never less than 3/4ths full, tire pump and woodsman's jack and Craftsman tool kit)  in the glove box. I also have a backpack(now that its hurricane season) that I pack every June, with the essential camping gear (stove, water purifier, rain gear, 1st aid, tent, 3 days food etc) ready to go. I can be out the door in ten minutes tops. I am glad to find someone more paranoid, er, I mean prepared than I. I may be a Libertarian, or liberal to the ill informed, but I am one by God, prepared Libertarian.

We're no where close to each other, except as Texas distances go, for me to go look for trouble, yes, I can start trouble, but don't want to. I would probably stick to the house, unless the house itself is compromised, then off to the panhandle with as much as I can carry. I would love to be a libertarian, if the Libertarians could come to grips with abortion, how many of us would come to the defense of a month old child, and do it with extreme prejudice?  But a late term momma, who decides its not just her time to have a child, or the worst case, a rape that ends in pregnancy, Lots of harm, and lots of foul, but none of it is the fetus fault.

I back off now, and allow for your thoughts.

I have been preparing for these times for a long  time, I don't want it but if it comes can arm my neighbors with arms and ammo. I know at least a few neighbors I can count on. They don't need my help, but know we can count on each other.

who decides its not just her time to have a child,

know we can count on each other.
Its those two words, Who Decides? I know its damn sure not me. A girlfriend and I had a bit of a pregnancy scare when I was much younger and a junior  in school. I bought two things. The pregnacy test, and I asked my mom for the diamond from her wedding band (she was divorced) and talked to a jewler about getting it made into a wedding ring. I didn't love the girl, but we were pretty good friends, sex aside, and I figured that was enough to be getting on with as it was better than most married couples start with. I believe passionately that there are two kinds of men in this world. Those who get a girl pregnant and put a ring on her finger and do their best to be DADS not just fathers, to their kids, and then there are scumbags. Say what you will about me, but I know what I want written on my tombstone.  Fortunatly for all  of us it was a false alarm. The point is, I personally don't believe in abortion, but I would never presume to make that CHOICE for someone else. Now, not only can we debate this till we turn blue in the face, we can probably take the other guys side and speak their lines. Its one of thoses things where you believe what you believe. BUT I still hope we can agree to disagree and still COUNT ON EACH OTHER as two like minded (in other respects) citizens.

I trust M25operator more than I do most of my family cause he is on the money when it comes to advice on weapons and ammo. I cannot say the same for some that I served with in the Air Force from 1988-1992.

That is my two bits. Take it or leave it, but M25 is knowledgeable. And I support him.

Not to take away from what Ping said about M25, because I agree. But Marines are closer to Marines they hate than they are to relatives they like.  Except for those who have gone totally beyond the Pale like Robert Garwood or John Murtha  for them there is a special hatred that stems from the sense of betrayal, If Bin Laden were standing with either of those 2 I would not shoot OBL first..

You better bring lots of ammo and a slingshot because you and TAB won't be finding any more when you run out. The 16 gauge and the 10mm are great guns to shoot, less great when you're looking to find ammo though.

We do that after just about every practice session, exept nobody's using 10mm. Mostly .45 & 9's.

Yeah, 10mm is an effective caliber.

Personally I dont think it's different enough from others to justify its existance, but anytime theres a new caliber introduced, guns sell!  And thus there will always be new calibers poping up every year, and a lot of people bit on 10mm...  Worth adding!

Everyone remember (M25, Geesh!  I'm impressed if you can effectivly use all those at the same time!), its a ONE GUN pole.  Doesnt matter if you own it or not.  Doesnt matter if you own any guns at all.  Just a question of "From your knowledge and experience, what would your personal choice be?"

I choose the 12 gauge because I can take anything from birds and bunnies to black bears with it. With the right ammo it works for almost anything you could want to shoot.

I chose .357 magnum. I have three of them and lots of ammo. Plus I can shoot .38 as well so it gives some versatility in finding dropped ammo. I can also use it to get an upgrade...My 6 1/2" Blackhawk is good out to 100 yards in my hands in minute of bad guy. I'm also thinking of a Marlin lever gun in that caliber.

2nd choice would be the 12 ga. I have lots of shells and that would be a good gun in close quarters. Hard to hide though.

The 12 gauge would be the best for the "I Can Only Have One" catagory. But for me it would be a hard choice between 12 gauge and 30-30.

It's only put more meat on the table, than any other caliber in history. Makes a good man stopper too, if it comes to it.

100 years of western movies can't all be wrong.

As far as I know it is also the caliber that best weathered the conversion from black powder to smokeless.
