Starting to do some research on a lever action rifle in .357 magnum.
I know most of the normal players, Marlin, Puma, Winchester, Henry, Savage (used)....who am I missing and can anyone recommend one over the other. I'm talking affordable, nothing in the stratosphere in price.
I've seen a newer Winchester in .30-30 and it's quality was terrible IMO....Now, if I could find a pre-'64 Model 1894 in any caliber for decent money, that's another matter alltogether.
-
I have two Pumas. One in 44 and one in 454. Good solid guns.

Haz, can you shoot .45 Colt out of the .454?
-
Spent today running my .44 Mag Legacy Puma in the SASS Wild Bunch match...it's a great gun. For cowboy competition it's slower than a short-stroked 1873, but it is still a popular (and much less expensive) choice. The guys from Legacy Sports were really taken with my "antiqued" finish from Steve Young ("Nate Kiowa Jones") at Steve'z Guns (http://www.stevesgunz.com/), the best '92 mechanic in the world. My Puma is from Brazil; the new Legacy's will be coming from Chiappa in Italy...I have a .44 Magnum on order from them.

Saltydog beat you to it. A pre-64 Model '94 .44 mag, in the box with papers for $175. The only reason I sold it was that my "dehumidified" storage unit wasn't and I didn't need it badly enough to justify the $200 reblueing cost. It was a good little hog gun though and I would reccomend looking at one.

Ksail has one also. Puma I believe. Send him a PM, if he isn't "lurking", has had nothing but good things to say about it.
-
No advise because I don't have a lever action and I do NEED one in .357 magnum too.
I'll look forward to hearing what you get and just keep wishing for now and drooling when you post porn.
I'm too poor to pay attention and saving for other priorities.
-
I've heard good things about Marlins.
-
I know Henry makes a really nice little .44 mag. If they didnt call it a "Big Boy" ::) ??? ::) I'd own one. Anybody know if they have a .357? Might be a good indicator for you to step it up a notch that so many companies offer the .44 mag., and the .44 is that much more common! Good luck.
-
I've got an old Marlin 30-30. It was my grandpa's and he and his brothers used to like to get deals on beaters at the swap meet. They'd buy all kinds of guns from the $2 barrel and part together serviceable pieces. Mine has a model 93 receiver and a 36 fore end. It's got a great trigger and is more solid than any lever gun I've ever come across. I noticed that at some point someone put the front sight into the dovetail backwards. The bead is facing forward. Anyone know the tool I'll need for that? It kicks a fair amount with that old metal butt plate. I want a Marlin stainless .44!

I think that Badger has hit the nail on the head. I have owned, and liked .357 handguns. They are a near ideal SD round. But when it comes to a carbine, why bother? Honestly, I have never liked pistol caliber carbines. You get all the disadvantages of weak pistol ammo, and all the disadvantages of a rifle's length, weight etc. The only upside is maybe a little more velocity from a longer barrel and more accuracy. It doesn't seem worth it even though I like the idea of a two gun combo. Th exception is the .44 mag. My advice (if you want it) is to trade your .357 in on a Smith, Ruger or Tarus .44mag. Then take your carbine money and buy a .44 mag carbine. I THINK a .357 carbine will work on deer and hogs at 50-100 yards. I KNOW that .44 mag with 240 grain soft points will do it. (Insert other 175 pound creature of your choice). The .44 mag will also fire .44 specials, a very civilized round for targets and SD. There IS a reason that there are 10 .44 mag carbines for every one .357. Its that they do a carbine's job better. Its your money, spend it how you like, but the .44 mag is a very easy round to fire from a cabine, but will still do the job. Just my .02,

I have the Henry, a Marlin and the Winchester, all in 44 mag. Like every one, but my favorite just may be the Marlin. The Henry is just too pretty, the Winchester too light, the Marlin feels just right.

Why .357? Here is the rub of it.
I can't hunt with a rifle in MA. Not allowed for anything other than coyote in certain parts of the state. I don't hunt coyote cause I eat what I shoot and I'm not going to eat dog! So, being as I'm a simple guy and don't want to have to find another caliber in a ever dwindling supply, .357 works for me. I can have my sidearm and a fun gun and don't need another tackle box of crap.
It's just a plinking gun, no scope, something to have some fun with and in a pinch, to have when and if the time arrises that I need a little more distance to ward off offending zombies. As we all know, you MUST shoot zombies in the head and my eyesight is terrible these days.
All I need is my 1911, my .357's, my .22, 12 ga and a thermos, this paddle game, a remote control, kitchen chair and my dog Shithead! That's all I need!!!!! ;D

Sorry you live in a commie state, Tim.
Here, if it is Fed legal then it is state legal.
BTW the Mares Leg is a pistol and does not take a fed tax stamp!

Didn't MB have one of those in the lever gun episode of TBD?
-
I love that Mare's Leg.
On another point. A friend of mine that is one of the most knowledgeable and experienced people that I know when it comes to firearms in general and is what I consider an expert in anything reloading and bullet casting believes that the .357 in a carbine is great. I defer to his knowledge and experience. A lever gun in .38/.357 is very versatile. Milder loads for plinking and small game to hotter loads for SD and larger game. I would love to have a lever gun in .357, 44, or .45 Colt. The pistol round carbines are fun.
-
My next one (some day over the rainbow.... ;D ) will be a .22 then a .357.

Yea Haz, you don't need a .44 or .454 to shoot Lillyputians!

I love my Marlin .22 model 39A

OH, add after the .357 a 45-70 ;D And didn't someone make a .308 or 30-06 lever?

www.midwestgunexchange.com
They are having a blowout sale and are offering Henrys at $360. They say all models, but don't list calibers. I'm also not sure about mail order on this sale, the guy I spoke with said he'd have to call me back. I called about a$589 DPMS AR (yes you read that right). If they will ship, I'm going to have a very funny looking AK. ;D

If it's on the approved list (don't ask) I have my FFL source the gun, pay for it and then they will order it. If I were in NH or CT on a visit and bought a gun that is approved, then I could register it within seven days of the purchase. Not that big a deal really, just a pain in the ass.
The issue is, it's up too me to do my due dillegence to make sure the guns are legal. A dealer in border states can sell me any long gun but they don't care much what I do with it. They made their money, don't care if I'm legal or not.
If I can find a gun that was registered in the state prior to 1996, say a Colt AR with 30 round mags, supressor, collapsable stock, bayonet mount and whatever else you could snap on, that would be legal. Wanna buy a new carbine with a 12 round tube fed magazine? Your out of luck...!
A buddy of mine had two of the afformentioned Colt AR's. He sold one of them for around $3,000.00...

Haz, Didn't the Winchester 1895 have an attached box magazine and come in 30.06 as well as other calibers?
I think Savaga made a 99 variation in .308.
Forgot about those Marlin 39s in .22.
So many guns, so little money. :'(
I think I'm going to Midwest Gun Exchange this weelend. Damn AC is out at home and it's 90 degrees out. :( Repair guys can't get here till Saturday. AC is 40 years old and probably needs to be replaced, so that is why I say might go to MGE. It's over the border, but about a 45 minute drive. Got a great deal last fall on mr RRA AR carbine last fall just before the election.

Wolfe if any of the Benchmades are auto knives pick me up a couple (no kidding). If it is the Pika at $20 I'll take three, If it is the Blackwater at $50 I'll take two , If BOTH are auto (or spring assist) get two of each.
PM me for money.

If you're still here I need help quick.
They will sell that DPMS Ar Sportical for $569, $600 with three mag pull 30rnd. My other alternative is an AK Gp 1975 with 4 hungarian mags for the same dollar, but I have to act quicly. I really have little preference between Aks and Ars, more short range stopping power vs better accuracy. It all comes out in the wash. The DPMS does not have a forward assist (which I never used anyway in the army) no dust cover (maybe, but probably not an issue) and no brass deflector. Beyond that its mil spec with 4 stock and 16 inch barrel (not chrome lined, but neither is the AK). Please help a brother out!
FQ13 who wants to have problems like this everyday ;D
-
Sorry FQ, though I know what an AK and and AR are, other than pressing a trigger, don't know anything more than that...
-
The Savage 99 did indeed come in 308, in fact I believe it was the first lever action chambered in that caliber. I do not think the Winchester 1895 was chambered in .308 because it was out of production before .308 was developed I know they were offered in 45/70, The reproductions being sold now might be, The Browning BLR may have been offered in .308 as they also had a box magazine.

Get the AR while it may not be as idiot proof as an AK brass cased ammo is more common, AK is almost all imported steel cased, can't reload it and Customs could cut off supply completely.
Besides, the AR has more after market accessories and is simple to change calibers also it and the 5.56 cartridge are capable of better accuracy.

Hi FQ,
The Pika II is part of Benchmades Red Class (The Red Class is their lowest end followed by Blue Class, Black Class and Gold Class at the top). It is a standard lock back with a 9Cr13 stainless blade and molded thermoplastic handle. It is made in China. It is a good knife for the price.
The Blackwater shown is discontinued. It is part of their Blue class and has one of their very good 154cm stainless blades (The Blackwater shown has the black titanium carbo-nitride coating) It uses Benchmade's patented axis locking mechanism (button seen on the handle). It is made in the USA and is excellently priced. Neither are assisted openers or autos. Both knives shown have partially serrated blades. Benchmade makes excellent knives and they do have an excellent selection of autos.
-
FQ,
I back up Tom on this. Get the AR. After market is easy, just a more 'friendly' platform for parts, ammo, mags, etc.
-
You can have one "GUN" with uppers for several calibers, carbine or longrange set ups and all you have to do is pop 2 push pins.
-

Nobody's mentioning accuracy here. Are we talking consistant 1" groups at 50 yards? Or sometimes missing a pie plate?
