I have no comment on the video, other than to say its cool, but my dad did help design the engines on that plane. He was pretty damn proud of it to. What stuck with me though, was a lesson in charachter he taught me revolving around those Pratt Whitney engines. They had finished them and set up a proto-type for viewing. They had an aircraft wheeled ladder deal where you could look down vertically into the thing. Dad, who desighned the turbine blades, was bendning in for a close look when his cross pen left his shirt pocket (hey he was an engineer) and clanked its way through the engine. Knowing it could cost him his job due to expense of tearing down the engine to retrieve the pen, he still did it as the potential danger to a pilot was too great. He's proud he helped design the plane. I'm proud he told his boss I've FUBARED a multi million dollar engine and it will take days and thousands of dollars to fix it. Its a lesson I've never forgotten.

+1

Missed it before. Good post.

Very cool aircraft. Mach 3+, and built in the 60s. It's one of those achievements that make you proud to be an American.

I have seen that before.  SR-71s and all of the Skunk Works aircraft were built back when engineers and warriors ran programs not accountants and people who haven't "walked the walk."  We have some of the best equipment in the world but we've also got expensive gear that simply isn't usuable because people are designing hardware that they have never had to USE before.  More and more programs are being run by people that have no or limited military experience and it shows.  Multi-million dollar piles of junk that no one wants to use.  IEDs are a great example.  We have spent BILLIONS on building counter-IED devices that get downrange and aren't even mounted on a vehicle because a "better" version is already being built.  Plus the bombers adapt to the gear as soon as it's activated.  Simple "on the fly" devices have a better defeat percentage than the gizmos sent from the Pentagon.

you are right....everything is being is being run by "managers" rather than Leaders.

Find the Leaders who are running things and you will see success.

It's even worse than that, things are being run by accountants instead of engineers or people who use the stuff. Everything is evaluated based on "metrics", cost, turn around time, man hours per unit, etc. Often the "metrics" don't address the question of whether the damned thing actually serves it's purpose.

Are you talking about military procurement or Obamacare?
