Title: Any NASCAR Fans here abouts?
Post by: sledgemeister on August 11, 2009, 10:58:52 AM
Firstly I love Motor Sport especially V8 Touring Cars here in Aus, then theres F1 and NASCAR in the states. I have started watching NASCAR a bit more partly because our boy Ambrose is racing over there atm and doing ok for a Tasmanain  ;D
When watching a replay of the Watkins Glen I was amazed at the crash between Gordon and Hornish and how no one was seriously hurt, definately a testiment to the safety features of the modern cars.
I have seen some humdingers when marshalling down here with the V8's and Truck racing but the Gordon/Hornish one was a doozy.

for those that may have missed it its on youtube already:

I've seen bigger. ;)  Not a religious fan, but I watch here and there.  Enjoy watch Champ racing, which I think your referring to as F1.  Formula 1 is for smelly Europeans.  If I'm not mistaken, Champ and Indy are the same thing now.  Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can correct me.  Indy, though, is was getting a little annoying last time I followed, people couldn't shut up about a certain lady driver, the drama she creates has a way of irritating me.

Champ cars, formally CART cars, were independent of the IRL (Indy Racing League) until 2008 when they merged back together.  Formula 1 is the Europeans idea of how to go fast with a barely safe vehicle and yes, by most standards, Europeans smell... ;D  F1 has traction control, ABS whereas Indy car and Sprint car drivers actually have to drive the car to go fast....

As far as Danica being irritating?  That's not the feeling I get! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sorry, NASCAR is one of the two holes in my Southern street cred. I prefer rum to bourbon and always saw NASCAR as just a bunch of rednecks chasing each other in circles. Don't get the appeal.

We are here. I love all sorts of motor sports, I 've been a Dale Earnhardt fan since I saw him race at Darlington in 1985. It hasn't been the same for me  since he passed. I watch it from time to time. I enjoy the dirt tracks around where I live. I enjoy the gun and political talk on this site. Plus the funny stuff on the site.

When they have races up here the crews stay at a hotel within sight of my Apt. (1000 +/- yards ) and the restaurant I usually go to stays open for them . I ran into Mark Martin and his Pit Crew in there the night before the last race up here.
The guy is a riot.  ;D

Yep, you said it, pal.
I was a 30 year NHRA fan and never missed a Gatornationals for over 20 years until I became unable to attend a few years ago.
Now, with the points system and dropping to the 1000 foot finish line, I don't even watch on tv any more.
I still love the technology of the sport (8000+ horses from a 500 c.i. V-8) and will always be a gearhead.

Maybe one day I'll get re-inspired.......

Yeah....NHRA changed it after Scott Kalitta got killed last year at Englishtown, N.J. (a very short shut-down area at the end of the track, freak accident).

I'm hoping it's just a temporary measure (but it's already been over a year) until tracks with short shut-downs can add on to the end. They also said it saves money for racers due to less parts breakage.........
It takes the 'nostalgia' away......I'm all for safety, but drag racing is supposed to be 1/4 mile, IMHO.

I'd heard about the Kalitta kid, a buddy of mine was at the race when I happened.  I'd kind of lost track of NHRA because unless it's one of the big races it doesn't get televised up here in N.E..  Too bad, wasn't Connie the kid's crew chief?  Michigan born I think!

Oh well, must make for some really tight brackets.  Is it only for the top fuel and funny car divisions?

I am a hardcore redneck NASCAR fan I admit.  I am a Jeff Gordon fan...and for all you smart a$$e$ out there dont bother I have already heard em all.

I was actually in the stands when Earnhardt was killed at Daytona.  Been to Daytona 500 6 times, Pepsi 400 5 times, been to Charlotte and Las Vegas a couple times a piece, and to the Brickyard twice... and am now working on going to Bristol.

Although I love NASCAR, latley have been really into Rally stuff.  I met Colin Mcrae years ago when working at a hotel in Daytona Beach.

Yeah, Connie (his dad) was his crew chief........Connie Kalitta (The Bounty Hunter) was one of the old pioneers in drag racing, from back in the day with Muldowney, Garlits, Prudhomme, McEwen............ (remember the 'Snake' vs. the 'Mongoose'?).

I think (don't quote me on it) the change was for Pro categories only........but I'm not sure, as I have not bought a new and improved rule book.

Don't sweat it, the kid CAN drive a race car.  I watched him take Montoya's IRL car and in about 5 laps would have qualified for the IRL race they were running at the track.  Montoya could barely drive Gordons #24.....this was before Montoya transfered over to stock cars.

Hey, watch the Old Pioneers stuff ;D....I grew up watching these "Old" guys.....summer nights at the old U.S. 131 Martin Dragway in central MI....the old man, and me....my brothers.....tons of fun!  Never made it to the BIG races, maybe now that I can afford to....would be fun.....

For the record, I like NASCAR for the tech....and those guys can drive....just because they go in circles doesn't mean they don't need skills....and they have to be in top shape.

We have a very nice facility about 30 miles from me that was built a few years back. The pro's, and others, use it a a tune-up track the week before the Gators in Gainesville, Fl. every year.

http://www.racesgmp.com/track-info.da

There is nothing in the world like standing right next to an engine that makes 8000+ hp wile it is being tested. That is a big appeal to drag racing....being allowed into the pits to watch the crews work. Those guys can remove, rebuild, and replace an entire engine assembly in about a half hour to an hour and be running. And most of the crew members are relatively young kids, working with a lot of high-tech equipment (actually have a school for it).

Nitro Methane Rules........

Fast forward to about the 2:00 mark when they fire it up....then at about the 3:27 mark they bleed in the nitro and bang the throttle.....

Spent many years in Mooresville, NC aka "Race City USA" home of most of the NASCAR shops,,...in Early Winter, they would open the shop doors at the "Garage Mahal" (DEI) and dyno motors all day..Still love that sound.

As Johnny Bravo posted,, when #3 died, part of my enthusiasm died with it.

I'll watch the last 25 laps, but they took races away from N. Wilksboro, Hickory, 2 races at Rockingham, and Darlington, down to 1 away for the "new tracks".

Still like Bristol, it's not about the "aero" package, racing in a toilet bowl. If your car has no damage your a *****..

Still think they should Man The F Up, and put on tread tires in rain and get on with it, like other racing org. Change tires for rain and keep racing.

I lived about 20 minutes from the track at N. Wilkesboro for a few years when I was a kid in the mid 70's. The guy we rented from had a "Baby NASCAR" that was kind of a precursor to today's Sprint Cup (or whatever the next level below the top dogs is).
Anyway, his car was a duplicate version of Richard Petty's #43 STP car, but in a smaller package (think '73 Maverick). It was way-cool for a kid to be around because he got us in to the pits and I got to meet Cale Yarborough once. Old NASCAR fans will know that name.

2 HOW is pulling the same type of stunt in the Lion hunt thread, I posted that if he wasn't there he should STFU.
M25 Operator said to let him have his say. Since I respect M25 I posted this reply to him

I would not have said anything about 2 how's post as I'm not a hunter either. But he is making unsubstantiated claims with out a shred of proof, insulting about half the members here, and using the the same type of  "I can talk tough through the internet" cowardice as what got Onrecess kicked off. this isn't the only thread where he's doing this, he more or less threatened FQ for not liking NASCAR.
I'm insulting, sarcastic and offensive when I'm making a point, but I back it up with facts, and information. If 2How doesn't like the subject he does not have to read it. If he can not accept that some people DO want to test them selves against things that can kill them back, that's just to bad.
If he just wants to play internet tough guy to compensate for his own inadequacy, he should find some where else to do it.

No insult, no politics (not that politics excuses a veiled threat) but just a joke. 2how has been a a useful member.
