S&W discontinued the little Sigma they had in 380 years ago. I really wouldn't mind that returning from the grave. A pistol caliber carbine that used the M&P magazines would be nice also.

Nope. :)
I see! Now there are two of you who signed that form :-X

I do like my S&W Sigma 380. .380 just wasn't as popular at the time. They made a skinny 9 just like it.

Are we this hard up? With all due respect to MB to whom I am grateful for hosting this site, I have limited interest in what gun HE is getting. If he wants to maintain my interest he will start another gun give away like the .22 AR variant a while back. THAT will keep me interested. ;D

DRTV sent me the following email at what I can only guess is 10:39 Eastern, as it is 10:15 Central where I am now as I write this.
"Southport, CT September 21, 2009 – Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. (NYSE:RGR) announces the introduction of the Ruger® SR-22TM Rifle, an autoloading, rimfire rifle that combines the legendary reliability of the Ruger® 10/22® with the ergonomics and configurability of the new AR-style Ruger SR-556™. The new SR-22 Rifle allows shooters to use economical .22 LR ammunition, while still enjoying the look and feel of an “AR” and experiencing the reliability they have come to appreciate from Ruger"
-
What's the price?
-
What's the price?
MSRP $625.00 !
-
MSRP $625.00 !
The SR556 was $2200 when it came out, its $1600 now, this'll go down to $400 and be a good buy.
-
MSRP $625.00 !
Wonder what the street price will end up being.
Given they cannibalized 2 existing products already being manufactured, one would think that beating the S&W M&P-22 price point would have been market target numero uno and get the rifle on the street under $500. Oh, well, they never called to ask me . . . :'(
-

Yep! That'd be a pretty cool 10-22 at $400. It looks like the innards are still 10-22 and they are pretty reliable. When I was a kid, we had a break-in and the guys took some of my dad's guns. In the 80's, the insurance company called to say that a 10-22 had been recovered in some guy's trunk in East LA. My dad bought it back from them and found it hadn't been taken very good care of. He cleaned it up and it is still a workhorse that my brother shoots.

The thing about this one for cheap training with an AR15, is the controls are different. Some of the more simple minded of us would get confused with mag changes and releasing the safety. It DOES look cool, and looks fun to shoot, but I probably won't buy one. But then again there was a time I thought I'd never buy an AR 15, too, and here I have 1 & 1/2 (Have to save up for the upper...) AR15's. (One in my lap as I type.)

With S&W's new AR22 at $500 I think this is a little spendy, and I would prefer it to be a little closer to an AR. However, I think that for the general plinker or someone that does not shoot AR's this is a great gun. The base being a 10/22 means that the aftermarket is already for it with low price items for both upgrades and needs.
I'm not saying that will will never buy one, but for right now I'll look to a traditional 10/22 plinker, a little more precise 10/22, and an actual AR in .22.
However, I congratulate Ruger on adapting an excellent proven system to a product for the general public and new shooter market.
By the way, is that our very own Marshal in a ball cap at the beginning of the video?

Congrats to Ruger on the new intro. Its good to see Ruger moving forward.

That could be considered TMI. :o
;D
Only by you, Haz! ;D And you've said worse......
-
So does this mean there's not gonna be a select fire LCP? ;D
-
So...we got ourselves all worked up for a 10/22 wearing AR-15 pasties and price tag?... ::)
One good thing....this might drop the demand (and prices) on the plain-Jane 10/22's so I can pick up a few for around the house.... ;D
I'd have preferred the SR-9 Compact or LCP-9mm, though.... :'(

I would have been pissed if they introduced a LCP-9....... I just bought a Kel-Tec P32
-
Well count me among the disappointed. I am a Ruger supporter, but this looks Hokey to me. It is not as close to an AR as the S&W. The safety is in the wrong place, the magazine release is wrong, and the magazine look is pure 10/22.
I think I will pass on this one as I did on the Remington.
Does anyone have any experience with the S&W?
-
I'll be interested to see how accurate it is with that free-floated barrel.
-
I would be shocked if it shoots better then thier *cough* target 10/22 model.
-
Frank, I'm not sure, but I don't think the barrel is free floated. They talk about a barrel suport block and it appears to be in the tube where the sling stud is. Image No. 6

Frankly, if you're going to run one of these things hard in training and you need 1-to-1 matching with a duty AR (an LEO Special Teamthat uses M4s as their issue weapon, for example), get a conversion unit for your standard AR lower — and, yes, I have a relationship with Tactical Solutions, but feel free to buy Spike's, CMMG's or even Jon Ciener's uppers. You end up with your own stock and trigger, plus a much more rugged gun than any of the dedicated .22 units out there. And yes again, it will cost you more, but TINSTAAFL!!! Especially not in firearms. It's worth noting that departments who do a lot heavy duty Airsoft training have gone away from the consumer products to much more expensive dedicated training guns...I saw a couple of AR Airsofts at SHOT that rivalled "real" ARs in price.
The Nordic Component-equipped 10/22s have had the crap shot out of them in training and in .22 competition by 3-gun champions like Tate Moots. They've held up great and are proven training tools, so I would imagine the SR-22s will follow suit. The Ruger Target 10/22s like the one I have are indeed fiercely accurate, but the hammer-forged heavy barrel is slower moving target to target...so once again, it depends on what one wants to do with the gun (doesn't it always?!?!). If you look at the Steel Challenge rimfire rifle or the Ruger Rimfire Challenge matches, distances are moderate, target-to-target sequencing is critical, and a shorter, lighter barrel and a red dot optic are the proven path for those type matches. In Sportsmen's Team Challenge events, the distances are greater and the targets smaller, so you see heavier barrels and higher power scopes.
You pays yer money, and you takes yer chances...
Michael B
-
You know....in the end, it really doesn't matter what Ruger turns the 10/22 into....
....we just really want to hear you incorporate the phrase "Tate Moots" into more things..... ;D

More on the SR-22 in this week's Down Range Radio:
http://www.downrange.tv/radio/127.htm
-
I stand by my earlier analysis:
Thats basically it in a nut shell. IMO, This is really not a good business move for them.... it does not meet the consumers need for this particular market segment... It does not replicate practicing with an AR. It replicates shooting a 10/22 with a pistol grip.
*The Mags are a totally different style
*The mag release is a totally different style/location
*The safety is a completely different style/location
*There is no traditional AR style charging handle
*You can't do any iron sight training
*Rails must be purchase for attaching accessories on the forearm
*Did I mention the price? The MSRPs for dedicated AR-22s by Smith or Colt are $500
I dont think people that are looking for an economical way to get some AR practice are going to buy this rifle -- 10/22 enthusiasts might, but they can AR out their own 10/22 for much less money. This just does not give consumers what they are looking for when making this type of purchase...... and for far less money they can go out and buy a conversion kit, a .22 upper, or a dedicated AR-22.
IMO, this way of entering the AR-22 market is pretty much a cop out. This is not an AR-22, it is a dressed up 10/22........ and a pricey one at that.

So,
When is the give a way? ;D
