Alleged bank robber wanted change
Man arrested Thursday at Farmers Savings Bank has different story for police.

The Burlington man accused of trying to rob a local bank Wednesday reportedly told police he was at the bank to get change.
Jodie Monroe Johnson, 56, is being held in jail on $20,000 cash bail. He is charged with second-degree robbery.
According to an interview with Burlington police detectives, Johnson said he went to the front door of Farmers Savings Bank, 3131 Sunnyside Ave., and an employee hit him. He tried to push the employee away and said he had no idea why he was being hit.
He reportedly denied, however, telling bank employees he was there to rob the place.
At 10:30 a.m. police were sent to the bank about a fight. They would soon field several calls changing that report to an attempted robbery.
Court papers indicate an employee told police he was sitting inside his office when he saw a man, later identified as Johnson, walking along the side of the building.
There was something suspicious about Johnson, which prompted the employee to go lock the bank's front door. Police said the employee could no longer see the man so he looked outside, only to be confronted by Johnson, who authorities say had his face concealed and was holding something in his hand -- also concealed with a towel.
Information about what he might be holding has not been disclosed, but police said it was not a knife or a gun.
Detectives said the employee alleged Johnson told him, "This is a robbery."
A scuffle ensued in the bank's foyer, and the employee was aided by his co-workers and some customers.
JD Henshaw, a Des Moines County Sheriff's reserve deputy who was nearby, was the first official to arrive and detain Johnson.
Henshaw said two men were largely responsible for subduing the alleged would-be bank robber. One, a customer, happened to have a concealed-weapon permit. He went to his vehicle, retrieved his weapon and had Johnson at gunpoint while waiting for law enforcement, Henshaw said.
The employee who had initial contact with Johnson, police said, suffered injuries to his head. He, however, did not request medical attention at the scene.
An effort to reach someone at Johnson's listed address was unsuccessful Thursday as no one answered the door.
Typical media story. They HAD to mention the CCW holder and the part he played, but buried it as deeply as they could without omitting it all together.

The CCW is secondary in this, and like you said, did not need to be mentioned. The customer was not carrying the weapon at the time. He went to his vehicle and got it. Anyone can do that.
I would have been more pleased if the report would have put the events as the happened and left the CCW out all together. Secondary would have been to mention the CCW as an after thought and tied to the fact that the customer was not actually carrying at the time in accordence with bank request by posted sign.
Hmmmmmmm, both of those options would not have drawn the sensationalism they were looking for.

I didn't see anything in the article about it being against the banks policy to carry in there. I would have structured that sentence better, but the only sensationalism of his involvement I see is in the thread title if you want to read it that way.

I guess my whole point in this thread was that the media is anxious to report on the evil people do with firearms, but only mention as an afterthought the gun owner who actually does something good for his community or his fellow man by being armed.....even in this case where he had to retrieve it from his vehicle.

the sad reality is a good chunk of the people in the US will only have bad exp with guns.

No, the reality is that a good chunk of the people in the US will have NO experience with guns, except what they see in the movies, watch on TV or hear about in the media. This is why they need to be educated that guns are not the problem in our society.

if you live in a large city(think LA, chicago, nyc... etc) chances are you will know some one that is a vic of "gun violance"
hell I live in a small city( just over a mil for the greater sacramento area), I've had a gun pulled on me twice. I've seen people shot in the face at arms lenght... If I had not had any good exps with guns before those times, I would not be a strech to think that guns are evil.
Another example, take my wife, almost ever single ER rotation she has some one comes in that has been shot.( low man on the poll so she gets lots of gravyard shifts) If it had not been for me, she would most likly still think guns are evil.
I don't know anyone that does not have a friend that has had a bad exp with guns.

Has she ever wondered how many of them were Gang Bangers paying the price of doing business or other types who actually DESERVED to be bleeding from a gun shot wound ?
I'm not trying to be an a hole here, Fire in the stove = Good, but fire in the Living room = NOT GOOD.
By the same token that 16 + young male bleeding out (job security for her profession ) might very well deserve those bullet holes. Statistically Teen / twenties gun shot recipients are more likely to be involved in criminal behavior than not.
Especially if they are non white.

I'm guilty of throwing an assumption out there without verifying, or even realizing I was doing it. Most banks have a no guns policy. It is not the bankers' wishes, but it is an insurance requirement. Basically, if you want your bank insured you will have a no guns policy.

Tom, I'd bet most our gang bangers, but I can always tell when she had to work on a kid.
I personally could give a rats ass about the bangers. its just stray bullets do tend to find people that are not envoled.

What you need to understand, though, TAB, is that most places in this great nation are NOT 3rd world countries like Kalifornia, New York, Chicago, etc. So while I will give you the point in those areas, MOST people don't live in metropolitan areas in this country. In my state, for example, ER docs can go years, sometimes their entire career, without seeing a gunshot wound.

How did I not hear about this. Hmm.. I live just up the road from Btown and have several friends and relatives down there? Heck I even know people that bank at that bank. I guess the QC News didn't deam it worthy. :s Oh well. The sheriff down there is pro CCW and I have met Johnstone several times from my LE Days. Either way. +1 for the good guys. Just too bad he had to go to his vehicle to retrive the gun.

It was a decent story that seemed to not need to have the part about the CCW. The news and readers in Iowa may have an entirely different perspective on the subject than if it were here in southern California. At any rate, I'm glad that at least the CCW holder was still portrayed as one of the good guys.
