That's funny, Tom Cruise' son Conner! I thought it was illegal to buy people these days! My wife and I were looking to adopt about 15-16 years ago and were willing to take just about any child we could. The waiting list was seven years long! These holywierd folks make a phone call and drop a hundred large and PRESTO! Fatherhood....
Disgusting.

Whose the invading force going to be?
Pelosi and her MoveOn.org hoard?
Sometimes when Hollywood can't find a marketable creative element, they remake an otherwise great movie.
I'll be optimistic for now.
I doubt it will stand up to the original.

Patriotic Americans will be the bad guys this time. >:(

Exactly! Ralph Waldo Emerson, critiquing American literature, said there were two ways to make a classic. Either improve on an as yet unperfected form, ( Ruger) to use a gun analogy, or create something wholly new (Glock). Anything else would be a pale imitation, or on its best day an echo of a masterpiece. Why bother? Red Dawn was not a great movie as far as acting and cinematography goes. What made it great was that it captured the feelings of a a generation. There is no one who came of age in the 1980s that hasn't seen that movie and identified with it. How the hell are you going to reproduce that and why? Its like the Jesus Jones song, Right Here Right Now that they released after the Wall came down. If you weren't there, you don't get it, if you were you remember being glued to the TV screen (in my case with a bunch of Army officers who were drinkinking straight from the bottle).

Link to Jesus Jones is below, you're riveted and made giddy (and more than a little pissed by wasted oppotunities) by this song if you were alive and aware at the time, if not, its just a pop song.

Thanks Tom, now I'm wondering if it's the "blue helmets" to "invade" and save the country from those Bible carrying, gun totin' ruffians.

As I said earlier, the movie DID capture the mindset of our generation ( us both pushing forty, TW). You, me and everyone we went to high school with can still be rallied by someone yelling WOLVERINES! Granted, we might not rally as fast, but we'll mean well. ;D

Don't recognize many of the cast members...
Hopefully, that's a good thing. An "unknown" cast may result in a remake that more closely resembles the original instead of a star-driven tour de crap. This cast would also be more consistent with the original, since (Swayze, Sheen) had not yet achieved "star" status when the original was made. That is, if memory serves me correctly. :)

Why mess with a classic movie? Red Dawn was badass, i remember my dad taking me to see it when it came out. Heck i was only 8 years old when that movie came out.

Same as video games and comics, not that I read the latter, you want to introduce it to a new generation. As long as you RESPECT the original than I don't mind remakes.

Agreed, but that respect is hard to earn. Those of us who grew up in the '80's weren't taught to duck and cover, but the Cold War was real. Shows like "The Day After" resonated. I'm not sure you can build that connection with a generation that doesn't get that. The whole thing seems silly without that Cold War angst. Does anyone seriously think Al Queda, or for that matter Russia, China or the UN will invade us? Without that "oh crap" factor, I just see a B grade action flic, which would be sad. Red Dawn was a classic for its time, but that time has passed. Try something new.

While I look forward to the movie. Problems I see (speaking as the parent of a modern day teen).
I'd guess that of the 2,000 kids in the local high school, maybe 5% could survive one week in the woods even WITH supplies, before surrendering in hopes of plugging in their Ipods, a warm bed, and somebody to cook & serve their food to them.
Looking at the school parking lot, I see every Japanese car made, corvette's, new GTO's, BMW's, and the occasional modern SUV. NOTHING that's going function as an escape vehicle (remember the 4wd, lifted chevy pickup they got away in).
Even if one of the kids parents owned a store, what are the odd's they would have supplies the kids needed? Bed Bath and Beyond ain't cuttin it.
Our populus today simply lacks the knowledge and fortitude to resist at all. Sorry, it's just what I see on a day to day basis that makes me believe these things. I travel all over the country, and yes, there are a VERY few area's that might be exceptions.
Ask yourselves seriously. Would my kids and their friends make it? Seriously? Now's your time to do something about that!

You are absolutely right sir! Hell, I'm thirty years old, and I know many people that are my age that wouldn't be able to make it on their own. Granted, MOST people I know would do just fine. They are avid outdoor people, camping, hunting, fishing, and many with military backgrounds. But for instance, my girlfriend, and just about everyone she knows, would be in a world of hurt, if they weren't with someone who knew what to do.
I have been slowly getting her used to the idea of preparedness. I think she is starting to come around, and actually starting to become interested in self sufficiency. My sister (19) by comparison, has no clue, and doesn't even want to acknowledge that anything bad could ever happen.
Our whole society has become soft. Too many conveniences. Too many toys. Ever sat and watched peoples reactions when the power goes out for a couple hours? It's actually quite sad.... ::)
Ask yourselves seriously. Would my kids and their friends make it? Seriously? Now's your time to do something about that!

Point well made gentlemen. I don't have kids and am the last one in the world to give parenting advice. However, I do think a little HTFU wilderness training would not be a bad idea. In my case, it was my dad getting sick of my sh-t and sending me to Outward Bound when I was 15. Best money he ever spent and the best three weeks I can remember. It was one of the few thngs we agreed on back then, and damned if he wasn't shocked when I got off the plane and thanked him for sending me. ;). I developed a lifelong love for backpacking, whitewater and rock climbing and got a lot of self confidence I didn't have before. It is (or was back then) a great program. There was no boot camp BS, and the instructors were all sweetness and light unless you were being a jerk. They just let the NC mountains kick your ass and laughed while it was happening. ;D The lessons were learned the real way. Nobody yelled because they didn't need to. It was reality 101 and if I had a kid, they would be on their way when they were old enough. Even if you take your kid camping, I still think this is a good idea as it takes thejm out of their comfort zone and forces them to interact with strangers in a new place. A life lesson in itself.

I agree. Off topic, to be sure, but my wife and I wanted to adopt about 20 years ago, but were told we didn't meet income guidelines. When we met their frigging income guidelines they wouldn't put us on the list because by the time the 7 year wait was over the wife would have been over 40. All we wanted was a kid to raise, nourish, cherish and love, but noooooooooooooooooooo.
SOrry, I guess what I thought had become a scar was still just a scab....prone to bleeding when picked at.

China will prolly be financing the movie. It'll hafta be somebody else. Zombies? Oh, wait, that's been done. Al Queda moles all suddenly quit their convenience store jobs around the country and and converge on Chicago. Our heroes quickly and quietly evacuate all the good guys from Chicago (there must be a few - Ditka, Butkus...Siegel, Schwall...) then let the mole brigade blow the whole damned place to hell. Roll the credits!

I like that!
Besides, Ditka, Butkus and others have all left, like me.

#1 Use your damn imagination and make your own movie. Don't corrupt a good movie with a good story line with a remake. If you don't have the imagination it took to play in the sandbox in kindergarten, do Red Dawn - The second time around, or Red Dawn - We didn't learn, or Red Dawn - We are seriously F**ked, ...
#2 As long as you are doing it, make it a true reflection of the current times - A government drunk on prestige and asleep at the switch, and terror sleeper cells destroying us from within.
But, don't corrupt a good movie that like any piece of good "literature" supplies more than just entertainment!
-
Good points, M58. First off, the name would hafta be different. If the commies already own half the U.S. it couldn't be "Red" Dawn, could it? Unless the enemy is us, of course, but "Red" is still too yesterday, as the kids say. Maybe Repo Dawn, as FQ suggests? I still like the assault on Chicago idea. Daley's Doom? Anyways, if Powers Boothe is still alive and is in it, I'll go see it.
-
The last Die Hard came close, though rather rediculous in execution.
Our electric grids are SO fragile that anyone making a concerted effort could cripple this country, quite litterally, at the flip of a switch! How quickly we've become so utterly dependant on power that we could not function, period!
-
No need to flip a switch, Timothy, but your post reminded me of One Second After (http://www.amazon.com/dp/0765317583/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=3223301699&ref=pd_sl_55gnl8rxd3_e), the novel in which our enemy uses an electromagnetic pulse to disable nearly every electric device in the country. If the movie people want to make the Red Dawn of the 21st century, they should base it on One Second After.

For #2, just make a movie of Rawles' Patriots with terrorist sleeper cells thrown in for good measure.

It's being filmed in Detroit, but is it set in Detroit? Are the heroes from the U.P., or are they gang-bangers using "hood stance" and the "punch shot" (punching the gun at your target as you shoot)?
