When it comes to the 500 there is no good, better or best - there is only works and breaks.  Check out the Leupold FX II series.

I opted for an Eotech on my 500.  Of course we went right into two weeks of sub-zero and two feet of new snow, but it will get tested here soon.

Good luck!

what ever you do, do not buy a rifle scope and put it on a handgun.   They can not take the abuse, you need a hand gun scope

caught this on another forum, .....member called S&W directly regarding his 500, and they gave him a recommendation for a Leupold fixed 2X.

Here's the link FWIW.

Also suggested doubling the rings, and Loc-tite for sure...

That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

I think that is a good choice and doubling the rings is good advice, I would also clean the scope tube with alcohol or acetone, and put a drop or 2 of blue loctite between the scope and the rings. Not just on the retaining screws.

The Leupold FX II in fixed power is what the S&W pro staff is/was using in their promos.  If you talk to them they have had (this is almost a year ago) no problems with fixed power.  They also recommended the EoTech and AimPoint as reddots.

I seriously looked at the AimPoint with three rings, and then I decided "why mess with rings at all?"

fixed power is stronger then variable power, there is no question  about that.
