Went shooting today!!!
« on: January 09, 2010, 08:28:28 PM »
Shot some (Ok, MOST) of my handguns today. A friend and I went to Targetmaster in Garland. It is a NICE place. I can say I'll definitely be back to that place. They seem to have a little bit of everything in stock when it comes to guns.

I LOVE my new S&W 649. It seems to like Winchester White box personal defense loads (110 gr. .357 Mag) best. Most of the other loads shot to about the same point of aim, but  It took a few rounds to get a feel for the gun. (Definitely takes some practice for lighter weight guns.) Shoots a little low, but that's ok with me. Shot my G30, and  man, I can't get enough trigger time with it. I love that gun. My friend shot a bunch of rounds through my GLOCK, and told me "this is reminding me how much I miss my GLOCK." He plans on replacing his G23 that he got rid of now. ;D I Impressed a couple folks with the 3 pistols I have with laser sights. Had a couple folks next to me that just had to shoot the Kimber Ultra Carry with Lasergrips. Showed them my GLOCK with Lasermax, too. And one of them let me shoot his Kimber Eclipse Custom II, which shot beautifully. The friend that went with me shot his new Kel Tec 380. Shot my Taurus 617 for the first time in a while, and it still shoots as accurately as ever. Kimber Ultra Carry's Laser sights haven't had to be adjusted since my dad first sighted them in, I don't think. We Shot my dad's NAA .22 with the .22 LR cylinder just for laughs. Didn't shoot any .22 Mag, because I didn't have any ammo for it handy. Didn't think I needed to shoot any magnum rounds through it. I'm not sure how many rounds I even put on paper with it. After we were done on the pistol range, we moved to the rifle range and shot my Magnum research BFR in .45-70. Always makes your shooting buddies smile.  ;D It was fun.

Envy.  Nothing but envy.  Congrats on getting a day at the range.

Good for you, I too like Targetmaster, I have known Tom since he opened in like 1981, good guy. I shot a lot of matches there in the 80's and 90's, then joined my local private club, which is free after paying dues, unless you shoot a match, then there is a match fee, unless your a life member like me, then it's always free, unless there are certain matches that need kickback to the national concern to pay for national events.

Glad you got to go. Really glad you had fun. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sweet report. I hope to get to the range tomorrow.

He and I have been trying to break away to the range for a couple months, and it FINALLY worked out. 8)

Walt,
Glad you got to go and get some trigger time. I have a 649 and I like that revolver. I shoot Buffalo Bore 38 +P 158 gr. LSWC and those loads are stout, but the flash is reduced in low/no light. If you get a chance to try some, do so and see what you think.

I shot an IDPA match (Bunnell, FL) today where it was 30 degrees for most of the match. Without question, this is the coldest match I have been in; we even had "snow"!  :o....I'm glad I went because I got to see how the cold messes with the mind. Three straight stages I received at least one procedural penalty (+3 secs.), which killed a decent time. On top of all that we had a bunch of new shooters (a good thing) and inexperienced safety officers (a not so good thing, but that comes with being new...), which slowed down the match. In all, I had a good time and I learned some things about me and my shooting today....

Incidentally, a USPSA club to the north of us (Fernandina Beach, FL) has a motto about shooting "Rain or Shine". They canceled today because of the cold. I guess they technically are adhering to their motto but not to the spirit of it....LOL.... ;)

I was reminded that the Winchester .357 Silvertips are stingers. Definitely the hardest recoiling ammo I had along for the .357. Doesn't bother me as much in my Taurus 617, but it's a bit heavier, and beefier all around than this J-Frame. My buddy said he likes my 7 shot .357. It's fun to help expand a friend's "Guns I Want" list, ain't it?? ;D All in all, I'm perfectly happy with the new carry piece, except lack of lasergrips, which I'm saving for. All the 649 owners I've known of or heard of, love the gun (And I'm now among them.). Which is probably why I've never seen a used one in .357 Mag. And I've only rarely seen one used in .38 Spl., for that matter...

Yessir, it was! :D The only bad part is, NOW I have a bunch of guns to clean. ;D

Thankfully since the main carry guns are a GLOCK and a revolver, THEY can wait till last to be cleaned without worrying about function.

Not to steal this thread, but so did I - today, Sunday, right after church. New indoor range the local club just built for a ton of money. Fifteen lanes with room to expand to a total of 30 - plus classrooms, offices, etc. Nice facility and brand new. They have a website, but very little on it - no pictures of the place or anything.

Anyhow, I went there a few weeks ago, and with M25OPs help, I realized why all of my shots were low. Changed that, and the RSO today helped me relax the isosceles stance to a weaver, so now I have a 4-5" spread at 20', but at least they are centered!  ;D

The club is also hosting RSO training from the NRA, so I am headed to that in February
