While I joke about Steve Lee, I say good on him. Without being condescending, what happened to gun rights in Oz, not just the restrictions on the type of guns you can own, but the idea that you have a "duty" to retreat, even in your own home, and can't have a weapon for self defense loaded and ready to go, and too bad for anyone who breaks into your place at 3 am, mystifies me, angers me, and scares the crap out of me because it could happen here, and would if the Brady Bunch get their way. The US and Australia share so much, from our common heritage, to the frontier experience. If someone held a gun to my head and said you have to leave the US or die, I doubt I would be alone among board members in choosing Oz as the prefered destination if y'all would have me. I think the reverse is also true. What galls me is the arrogance of a government thinking its acceptable to disarm the populace and say that they must rely on the police (who are a detterent rather than a defense) to protect them from harm and jail anyone who demurs and says "Thanks, but I simply don't trust you and will do the job myself if thats all well and good". The acceptance of this, from what I consider my brothers and sisters in Australia, not US citizens but close enough in my book, and again I doubt you'll hear a word of dissent here, mystifies me. We would have riots and worse if this cap were pulled here. Hell, screw the licenses Lee talks about, I can walk into any gun shop and buy any non-silenced and non-full auto weapon I want in Fl. with no more than five day wait (dependng on the county). If I do want a can or full auto (which I don't) all it takes is a $300 fedral tax stamp, allowing the ATF to search your house without a warrant (which is why I don't buy that tax stamp), and the green to buy the gun/silencer. Hell, I can and do walk the streets with a Glock in my pocket. And no I'm not just happy to see you.
The thing is this Phil, anyhing we can do to help you change your laws to the point where owning a gun for SD and no other purpose (as affirmed by the Supreme Court in the Heller case) is deemed a fundamental right, any help we can give in establishing a "Castle doctrine" that says you have no duty to retreat, not just in your home, but on the street, any help we can give in allowing you to carry concealed, as 37 states have done, just let us know. We will be there for you as much as we try to be there for members in such benighted states as California, New Jersey and Illinois. Its all the same fight.
