I think Custer was wise to leave the Gatling guns behind, they could not be fired on the move, so they would have been useless in the only type of tactics that work for Cavalry, speed, and mobility.
As it was he could not move fast enough.

I had read a couple places that he was using pack mules. Hence the message about bringing up "the packs".
