 I think Custer was wise to leave the Gatling guns behind, they could not be fired on the move, so they would have been useless in the only type of tactics that work for Cavalry, speed, and mobility.
As it was he could not move fast enough.
One thing I have to question , you mentioned "The Gatlings might have been faster than the wagon train, "
I had read a couple places that he was using pack mules. Hence the message about bringing up "the packs".
I do not recall the sources, so I don't know how valid they are.

While Custer was known to own a pair of nickle plated, Ivory stocked, S&W's, what is he believed to have been carrying at the time of his death ?  ;D

While Custer was known to own a pair of nickle plated, Ivory stocked, S&W's, what is he believed to have been carrying at the time of his death ?  Grin

I pretty sure it was 44 caliber, just can't remember if it was Colt or Schofield.... ???

Sorry to leave you all hanging, I just got back to this thread.
A recent magazine article based on a photo of Custer claims he was carrying a Webley RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary ) Revolver in .455. it is known the pistol was presented to him by some Lord or Earl that he took hunting, and it has never turned up among his effects.

They MAY BE over at Ft Lincoln.  The last time I took a tour of the Custer house they mentioned them, but it has been a couple of years.
