Internal Senate emails confirmed by NRA Board Members are highlighting just how far the National Rifle Association has fallen.

The organization recently collaborated with the left to obtain a carve out of the DISCLOSE Act, legislation designed to silence bloggers and outside interest groups like tea party activists. This was a first amendment issue and the NRA gladly took a position and campaigned for its members to take a position on the DISCLOSE Act.

One of the NRA’s chief arguments was that it needed the carve out to be effective in its advocacy of Second Amendment issues. But here’s the problem: these internal Senate emails confirmed by NRA Board Members show that the National Rifle Association’s management team has explicitly and directly told the NRA’s board they are prohibited from testifying about second amendment issues during the Elena Kagan confirmation hearings.

That’s right: the foremost gun rights lobby in the nation is prohibiting its board from testifying in the Elena Kagan confirmation hearings about the second amendment.

The NRA did issue a statement on Friday after the internal Senate email began leaking out informing people of the gag order. The statement noted Kagan’s problematic record on guns, but that’s just smoke and mirrors. Don’t believe them when they say they are working with Senators to investigate her record. If they were really working with Senators, they would have accepted an invitation to testify on the Kagan nomination when they were invited. The gag order on board members is not limited to providing testimony, but it prohibits board members from coming out against Kagan in their individual capacity.

If the NRA is really working with pro-guns Senators and Kagan is really hostile to Second Amendment rights, which she is, they will score her confirmation vote and actually make the score count this time, unlike they did on the confirmation of Sonya Sotomayor. With Sotomayor, they waited until several days after RedState began demanding a score and then, in effect, announced they’d score it and ignore it.

First they collaborated with the left to get the DISCLOSE Act through the House, now they are blocking their own from speaking out against Elena Kagan. Is this the deal the NRA cut with the left? They get a carveout and shut up their board?

Sounds like a Saul Alinsky playbook strategy. Divide and conquer from within.  With the rash of NRA announcements/reports, that seem to "go against the grain" of what the NRA is about, leads me to believe, something is afoot. Especially during a mid term -election.

After the initial trashing of the NRA over the Disclose Act, statements from Chris Cox, and LaPierre, clarified it, and the agreed upon lack of PR response properly.

Somehow when I read "Gag Order" from the NRA, it just seems contradictory. Without the NRA, your AR would still be under the Clinton AWB ban, or worse.

I'll reserve final assessment untl I can get it from the source.

I have to agree with you there, TW. If they have I would think it's for a reason other than what the article would suggest. maybe to keep from people being 'misquoted' by the liberal media. not that they would ever do anything like that...

Please read the book Ricochet, by Richard Feldman. This kind of activity is very consistent with what he describes in his book about the NRA. The NRA really doesn't want to win the war, they want to skirmish; it keeps the money coming.

Just what I've been saying right along.
If you could make all guns on the planet disappear over night your biggest foe would be the Brady bunch.
If you could WIN the war for gun rights over night you would be opposed by the NRA.
There is no more $ after an out right victory.
NOTE FOR THOSE LIKE TAB, WHO THINK THEY ARE TO "GOOD" FOR THE NRA.

The gorilla has two parts.  The fighting part is the ILA.

The other part is the NRA that supports hunting, shooting and gun ownership in general. 

I don't know how effective the ILA is compared to the other "fighters", but not many will come close to the other functions of the NRA which should also be supported.

Please forgive me for being slightly off topic, but does anyone else see an eerie resemblance between Kagan and Jon Lovitz?  Maybe he decided to enter politics without the baggage of his previous career.   ;)

I was upset when I first heard about the deal the NRA made with the disclose act. But after reflection a bit. I'm not anymore. I pay the NRA to fight for my gun rights, not my speech rights. Right now a can say why the NRA would issue a gag order to it's board members. Personally if I were on the board I would probable ignore it. What I think we need to remember till someone makes it clear why, is the NRA is a focused 2A rights group. They don't care if she is a communist, a socialist, if she anti or pro abortion. Their only concern is how she is on 2A issues. Their strategy with Sotomayor was to wait till the issue came up in the conformation hearings I think that's what they are doing now. Because we all know she sucks dick horribly on 2A issues!!!!
