Walther P99......
« on: August 17, 2010, 08:11:59 PM »
.....Lady Bic already has a Walther PPS for concealed carry and is about to take her CHL class here in Texas.  Are the controls/trigger on the P99 pretty similar?

I'd like her to take something, with which she is somewhat familiar, but with a higher mag. capacity (or they'll wear her out reloading !!) and for which there is a better selection of 'lefty' range holsters. An H&K may also be a possibility due to the ambi. controls.

We have several Glocks but she has small hands and isn't comfortable with them.....although I think she shoots fine.

Bic, has she shot one, one the hardest features to overcome people with small hands is trigger reach, compare all the wonder 9's, who has the shortest reach trigger, Glock, a grip modification from gripreductions.com  might in order for a perfect fit. Most of the 99's have decockers, but not a manual safety like the PP series, I have small fat hands find the trigger reach thing a big deal, I love my CZ 75, but I have to shift grip for the 1st shot if done DA, cocked and locked the safety sucks, but it is a great pistol.

Tell the guy at the gun store this is my .02, and he better take it off the bill. ;D

Big difference.

Two different P99 actions.

The P99QA  (quick action) is a striker fired semi-cocked double action.    8lb trigger pull through 0.31"  (Glock like).   No decocker, no safety, though I seem to remember they make some runs with a safety for some LEO procurements.

Then there the P99AS (anti-stress).   It's a a true SA/DA.  The twist is that it has a mode where the trigger has a very long pull first shot. (0.551" at 4.4#)   It's there to help prevent accidental discharge.   However, once you fire the first shot then the subsequent ones are a normal single action very short pull (0.31" at same 4.4#).   They use the disconnetor to determine where the trigger is set.       And you can always take up the slack, leaving it in short SA mode.

The gun has decocker.  And then it operates in a true DA mode.   Long, heavy pull (.551" at 11#).....for the first shot, then SA from there on out.

There is no "manual" safety.   My complaint with this gun is that the reset is very short and I sometimes fire "doubles" when I wasn't meaning to.  Takes practice.

The grip, for me is probably somewhere between a single stack 1911 and the double stack PT92.  The later I find much to big for my tastes.   It does come with extra back straps and I use the smallest.   I love mine in .40S&W, but I wouldn't use it in competition.  The variation in trigger pull throws me off, plus I'm not sure that some ROs wouldn't make you start decocked.    I do like it for my full size carry and bed side gun.   Magazines are expensive compared with Glock or XD.

My wife has one of the titanium QA models, they do have a decocker.  Also, the QA model is not second-strike capable (again similar to a glock), if for some odd reason it doesn't go bang the first time, you have to re-rack the gun just like any other single action pistol.

We've never had any kind of failures with her pistol, so I'm not terribly worried about it.  I prefer the AS trigger myself, but I still shoot her gun more than she does.

When I took my CHL classes they only let us load 3 or 5 rounds at a time. which ever was required for that string of fire. Mag capacity wasn't an issue.

Thanks all, I guess we need to go somewhere & check out as many of the different models as we can...maybe some other stuff too. Walter, I now the guy she'll take her course with, he did my grant and 2 renewals, and he let us use fully charged mags. Of course that was just myself and a gunsmith friend all 3 times so his rules may be different in a larger rawer group. I'll check, thanks.
