Does anyone own a 6906 or similar S&W?
« on: November 15, 2010, 08:10:16 PM »
I just picked up a couple of these on the never ending search to find the right carry gun for my wife. I've had friends who've had them over the years and have shot one a couple times in the past but never owned one. Anyway these were trade-ins from a security company in really good shape but without any boxes or manuals. I was trying to figure out the take-down procedure for them and couldn't find anything online. They look like they would break down somewhat like a 1911 the slide stop lever seems like it is used in the same way. I tried to move the lever out but it seemed really tight and I didn't want to force anything until I was sure this was the correct method. I'd appreciate it if anyone could advise, I'd like to break these things down and give them the good cleaning they need.

bafsu, great gun! Identical to the S&W 4006, 411, line ( which I had :'(), they do break down like a 1911,,, Mine always field stripped after dry firing, prior to the M+P, these were/are, fantastic pistols.

It's a kinda three hands needed takedown, but mag out, safety check, and safety off, slide goes back over the curve of the mag release, they are tight, but if it hasn't been out for a while, perhaps some oil on the mag release helps. "Little soak time"...

may even take a partner to love tap with a small punch on the right side of the frame to come out. Mag release pulls double duty, as a take down "pin", but your initial assessment is correct.

Once removed, slide goes fwd. off the frame, like an other semi. What a great pistol. Vid may help.,pretty straight forward.

YOU GOTTA POST YOUR OWN GUN PORN DUDE!!!!!! ::)

I had the old Trijicon Night Sights installed, and miss mine terribly.

Check to see if it will fire WITHOUT a mag, most will not. And you got a "couple"? Sweet.

OBTW, can you get another one for me? ;D

Perfect, thanks. I thought my initial idea was right but I've learned over the years if you slow down and make sure you don't break as many things or at the very least lose as many spring loaded small parts. It is really tight like it's never been broken down or cleaned. I'm going to let it soak with some CLP overnight and may even use the old delrin punch as a last resort now that I know how it comes apart for sure. That picture looks identical right down to the item tag. Both have the round trigger guard which I believe is the earlier 6906 as opposed the the loopy shaped squared off trigger guards some of the other 6906's I've seen have. I got a steal on the two I got, that's why I bought both. One is in about 95% condition, the other is about 85% with some matte finish wear on the aluminum frame. I'm thinking of doing a high polish job on that one and if I don't end up liking it just duracoating it in a matte grey. I promise to get some gun porn of these once they're cleaned up, I can't bring myself to take pictures of a dirty gun unless it's for educational purposes. I always liked these as well, one of those on the list to get at some point guns that I finally picked up. The only thing I don't like is the magazine disconnect safety. I removed the one from my Hi-Power which helped the trigger pull a ton but I don't carry it for self defense. No matter how much I dislike it I won't take out any safety from a gun I may carry or use for self defense.

I've owned a couple of 6906s in the past and still have a 6904 (blued version).  I have never had any problems with realiabity with the guns.  Owners manual can be gotten here.
