My Mother, moved to this country from Sweden in the early 50's. Learned English, and how to speak it properly. This carried over to my Sister and I. My Father, also spoke like an English professor, and slang and improper annunciation was not tolerated, and was corrected.
Having an expanded vocabulary, and speaking well, has been on a downhill slide for decades. Just like "clips" and "mags",...yes, we know what you mean, but it is "technically" not correct.
I am grateful, that those corrections, "rules" of grammar, and speaking properly, were part of my childhood. While speaking to an owner or Capt., Engineer, etc,.. of a large yacht, it is best not to speak like an idiot, and has served me well.
Although living in rural areas of NC, were always fun.
