I was challenged to a scrabble game a few weeks ago against my wife and her sister.  I gave them the choice to pick any dictionary in the house for reference and rather than use the little, bitty, basic, 100 page one they normally use, Deb went and got the twenty pound, 2000 page gem my father in law had in the closet.

It was bloodbath...I annihilated them...

When speaking, I really love to use antiquated and sometimes arcane words......it catches most folks off guard, but maybe it makes a few think from time to time.  ;D

I have long known that I have a great deal of respect for you, Peg.  This post confirms I was right.

My Mother, moved to this country from Sweden in the early 50's. Learned English, and how to speak it properly. This carried over to my Sister and I. My Father, also spoke like an English professor, and slang and improper annunciation was not tolerated, and was corrected.

Having an expanded vocabulary, and speaking well, has been on a downhill slide for decades. Just like "clips" and "mags",...yes, we know what you mean, but it is "technically" not correct.

I am grateful, that those corrections, "rules" of grammar, and speaking properly, were part of my childhood. While speaking to an owner or Capt., Engineer, etc,.. of a large yacht, it is best not to speak like an idiot, and has served me well.

Although living in rural areas of NC, were always fun. ::)

I just don't use fancy language to say most of it.   ;D

It's a machine shop, every one speaks reasonable English, and even the guy from the Phillipines is literate enough to know that Niggardly and nigger are totally unrelated.
