I believe her husband or son was tragicallly gunned down on a subway train. IF concealed carry had been allowed in NY at the time, perhaps her husband could have defended himself or perhaps another individual who was carrying could have intervened. To bad that if she had been a congresswoman at the time and they might have been able to get a concealed permit that is reserved for those who are wealthy or who are famous or who are politically connected. And this occurred post Bernard Goetz!
Graywolf, You are thinking of Carolyn McCarthy from NY, Her son was injured and her husband killed by the subway shooter.
That's part of the story. It would have been impossible for her husband to obtain a carry permit legally any where in the US, she had a protection order against him and had filed divorce papers because he had a habit of slapping the sh!t out of her. It was the insurance money from her almost ex husband that financed her first campaign. Had he been shot only months later she would have got nothing.
That "tragic event" was the day Carolyn hit the Lottery.
