I Finally Caved
« on: May 23, 2012, 05:03:46 PM »
Ok so years of being tempted by friends' and family's AR's, I have broke down and finally bought one.  I have been an AK guy since I could legally purchase one but the allure of the perfumed inner thigh that is the AR has finally broken me.  If I could only grab one on the way out the door, it would probably still be my trusty AK but I think there is enough room in my heart for two loves.  I picked up a Colt LE6920.  Any suggestions for a first time AR owner?

And ammo. The local Fleet Farm is selling Federal 5.56 M855 for $330/1000, sometimes on sale for $300. That is an excellent price.

Oh, one other thing. Enjoy the crap out of the Colt. You did buy a very nice one.

The best suggestion I can offer is to SEND IT TO ME IMMEDIATELY............  ;D

What?

NO??

Oh well.....then I go with what the others have said..........  ;D

If it doesn't already have one, get a one size bigger charging handle latch, from Brownells or Midway, Bravo Co. etc,...

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=41005/Product/AR-15-M16-OVERSIZED-CHARGING-HANDLE-LATCH

They have standard (stock), medium (which I own), and large (too big IMHO), but maybe not for you.

If it has a standard flash hider, consider a compensator (I use a Miculek) $30 from Cheaper Than Dirt.com...

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ARR535-1.html

Keeps the rifle flat and makes follow up, rapid fire shots tight, as the moderate recoil from a .223/5.56 is reduced even more, although the gun gets a wee bit louder....

Spare parts kit from any reputable manufacturer, DPMS, BUSHMASTER, make great kits to have on hand.

As posted, mags & ammo, more mags and ammo. Target shoot with .223, stockpile 5.56 when you can.

I also love my AK, as it only takes a steel toed boot and a hammer to fix,.....the AR,,,,well it's a bit more "refined" so spare parts are a must, especially if BHO get re-elected...

Don't go crazy with accessories...Keep It Simple..

Oh and finally, ENJOY IT!!!! Congratulations!!!!!

I built my own AR after I "Caved"..... 8)

Gogle2112,

In reference to TW's last post....

Since  you are a new AR fan, you might not know, but there IS a difference between .223 Rem. and 5.56 NATO.

Here is a link just in case.

Take care.

Solus, that was a good article.  I knew the difference myself but I saved it so I can send it to people I know.   Thanks,  Ken.

Wise words of advice, thank you Solus, make sure the caliber is engraved for 5.56 NOT just .223, as the pressures are different and could result in "bad things". I believe Colt runs their LE series in 5.56 compatible,...just double check.

Solus,
Thanks for the great advice, the fact that the LE6920  "Accommodates the full range of 5.56mm ammunition, including the NATO M855/SS109 and U.S. M193" was one of the reasons I chose this one.  Your post did make me go back and double check though ;D.

Thanks everyone for the great advice.  I'm definitely going to pick up the extra parts kit and plenty of mags and ammo.
