I read  about three dead Americans coming home from Kabul in today's paper. This irritates me (that's academic speak for I want to beat the crap out of someone, but I'm not sure who, and lashing out at random seems terribly rude. I just know its not right and for damn sure it shouldn't be a 20 year old on the slab and a family getting the first and worst telegram of their life). What the hell is the end game over there?  Its not that we've never played this game before in the same place or anything. I mean for god's sake, we know how this play ends. Here's Steel Eye Span singing a song from 1973 written about a war fought and lost in the 1890s. Is anyone detecting a theme? ::)
FQ13 Who will refer anyone calling me a defeatist to Alexander the Great. And this isn't about party. I've seen both put forward the same vague agenda. Here's an idea instead. Tell me when we have won, what constitutes victory. Give me objective conditions where we can declare the war over. Unless you can sum that up in one sentence, bring the boys home and f..k the goat herders, we tried, and we wish them good luck. Alexander the Great failed, the Brits failed and the Sovs failed. We think we will win why? :-[

Pretty cool tune, I could not make out any of the words, but the sound was great.
Loved the art, The Photo's were from the Crimean war of the 1850's. The paintings depicted  Waterloo, ("Scotland Forever !" by Lady Butler June 18 1815, The Charge of the Royal Scots Greys at Waterloo ) the Crimea, ("Balaclava", By Lady Butler depicts the return of the shattered Light Brigade from their famous charge,  and "All that was left of them" by Richard Caton Woodville depicting the roll call after the charge ) The very last picture is  "The death of Wolfe at Quebec".
But to answer your question , They have no feasible objective. Spreading democracy ? They don't want it.
I think I speak for every one with any sense at all when I say that all these people like McCain screeching about how we "Have to stay the course in Afghanistan" are f*cking idiots. Not only do we not have a course, we don't even have a destination.
All that is being accomplished in Afghanistan is getting combat experience for the officer corps at the the expense of lives and wearing down our armed forces.
A more appropriat companion painting would have been Lady Butler's "Remnants of an Army".
Google it, try WIKI.

Listen again. Its about a veteran of the British war in Northern Pakistan (or I should say Northern India/Southeren Afghanistan, f..k those people in Karachi). Its as salient today as when it was written a century ago. Same crap, different day, only now its our guys who go home minus their legs rather than the Brits. But do you think our guys will have accomplished anything more than those Tommies who bled out a century ago in that same wasteland? What are we thinking?

3 things;
1) That will keep the sheep distracted.
2) It's for the children.
3) I wonder if I can get that staffer's number ?

That may seem cynical, but the truth, if anything, is even worse.
GW Bush sent troops with the stated objective of smashing Al Queda, finding Osama, and toppling the Taliban regime. With in 90 days the Taliban were toppled and Al Queda were fleeing like cockroaches from the light. At Tora Bora we massacred current AQ membership, and signals intel. tracked Bin Laden crossing into Pakistan.
Mission accomplished.
But the Dem Congress, unable to face the harsh reality of the real world could not accept that our only valid purpose was to smash shit and kill Wogs, so you got touchy feely BS "Mission Creep", We going to "give them democracy".
You can't give something to people who don't want it.
But you also cannot pound common sense, or history, into a Dems head with a 3 Pound sledge.
So, here we are 10 years, and hundreds of dead and maimed troops later, and they are still wondering " WTF do we do now ?".

Speaking of old wars, I hear those Moisin Nagants shoot straight and true, and they're reasonably priced as well. :-\ When did it get to the point where you want to put a bumper sticker om your car that says "Support the Troops, Shoot a Politician", and the fact is that sticker would apply to BO AND W (particularly with Rumsfeld). Bottom line, tell me when we win or bring my brothers and sisters home. I will only support a war if you can define where we have attained victory. Otherwise? I think that you are amassing a lot of money and power to the state and the state will tell me when the crisis is over and my rights are restored. I think not.
