One way is to get a list of those scheduled to be on the island at that time, subtract the ones found alive and assume all the rest have been killed.  It will produce the maximum  number of dead....not a chance of being accurate, but it will be the biggest and what a great headline it will make.

Truthfully it is a simple enough mistake if you are rushing to be first to air.
Especially in this case where several people swam to shore. Killed, wounded and missing were all lumped together, as the missing were accounted for the number dropped.
