Potpourri of the last 2 weeks
« on: October 05, 2011, 08:08:15 PM »
So things have been a little hectic around here.  Lots of little chores and tasks.  Since shooting in "The Annual Glock Match", I've been hustling.   (Still holding on as 37th out of 402 and waiting for the prize drawings.)  Thought I'd post a catch-up on what's happening and a foretastes of reviews to come.

Got my FN FNAR finally.  Arrives tomorrow at the dealer.   $959.  Not NIB, but RIB......Refurbished In Box.  With refurb letter from FN stating it is the same as new only no 1year warranty.  Yes.  Yes.  Yes.   Love a good deal.

Also won a bid on GunBroker for a 5"  S&W M625.  It's a -2  which was the way the 625 was introduced.  There was never a no-dash or a -1.  It further doesn't make sense because when S&W introduced the 625-2 in 1988/89 the M25 was already on its -6 version.  And while the 625 is listed as being introduced in 1989, there were a bunch of them stamped "model of 1988".  Go figure, it too was a find and $100 below the going market of $700+.

Sold the wife on these good deals so no problem on the home front.   (She loves good deals.)

In the mean time I had sold off my S&W 624 cause I didn't want to have to deal with both .44 spl and .44 mag.  The money was burning a hole in my pocket.  I also took some other safe queens too the store and traded them.

Since I had 2 boxes of 30/30 ammo that I couldn't seem to give away, I got a junker lever action.  A Montgomery Wards one!   It, like the Mosin-Nagant, are just because everybody should have one tucked away.

And since I been wanting to try out one of the newer gas piston air guns, I picked up a Benjamin Nitro in .22.  Have to admit to having been an airgun snob, what with my Beenman R7 and Weihrauch 77, I didn't hold out much hope for this gun.   This was only $149 with a 4x30 scope.  I've only begun to break it in, but I like it.  I may upgrade the scope to a BSA 4-12x40 I have laying around.  Shooting it so far in the basement at 10yds it's performing well.  One hole groups so far and I've only put 30 rounds through it.  One complaint I read on line was the scope rings creeped.  I don't understand how since there is a rear ring with a set screw that mates with a hole in the top of the receiver, just for that purpose.   I bet a lot of users didn't realize what that set screw was for or where to mount the rings.

Oh, and I fondled a CZ PCP air rifle....talk about nice.   If I were going to get "into" PCP (not the drugs people), I'd really want one of those CZs.  Beautiful red streaked laminated stock.

Sent of my request to S&W for a letter of authenticity on my 629-3 Classic.   It was made in the 90's but the engineer number is from the '80s.  According to the book it could have been a special run 1 of 50 for some distributor or occasion.   (Unfluted cylinder, recessed chambers, full underlug 8-3/8" barrel, Hogue stock with S&W logo, case hardened hammer/trigger.)  Let you know when I hear back........it's $50 fee now, btw.

Also gone through several books this summer that I'd like to review.   A biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was one of the masterminds behind the attempted assassinations (plural) of Hitler.   A non-fiction book, The Policitcally Incorrect Guide to Socialism.  Also a history book about Prohibition,  Last Call.  And then an EOTWAWKI novel, calld One Second After.

I'm plotting and scheming to get to another outdoor Glock match.  Maybe Charleston at the end of the month.

So that's what I've been up to and hopefully I'll be a little more active here with updates and pictures of all of this stuff.   Soon.

Love the writings of Ron Foster, awesome book!

The Montgomery Ward 30/30 is either a Winchester or a Marlin.
The old store brands were name brands with different markings.

A Marlin, Tom.  Side ejection.  I'm taking it to the indoor range today along with the 91/31 and fire a few rounds to check functioning and sights.  After that a quick cleaning and into the safe they go.    I'll post pictures later.   It obviously spent time bouncing around in somebody's pickup.   Since I probably won't fire it again, better to have a $150 beater in the safe than a $400 one that's pristine.
