Around here most people go for the 30/30, and most of the younger guys never heard of 38/55.
But now and then you'll run across some old fart who swears by it. It's supposed be flatter shooting than the 30/30, up here in the thick woods it's not really an issue so much.
I have no idea why it faded out and the 30/30 is still going strong.
PC vs Mac. Sometimes its about the marketing rather than the product. I've posted on this before, and offered the 10mm and .41 mag as evidence. Some things catch on and others don't. And it doesn't mean the 30/30 is bad. I mean the Winchester/Marlin 30/30 was the first AK. Inside of 150 yards its all you need and damn near idiot proof. It could just be better and its a role of the dice as to which caliber becomes a standard and which stays a boutique round.

I own rifles in both calibers and the 30-30 is probably the most practical, versatile and economical... but the 38-55 is mighty fun and I think it does a little better at long range in windy conditions (in my experience).

Great videos and I'm just as surprised that the 38-55 got that kind of penetration. It would be nice if you'd had a 30-30 to compare the penetration with. Even with a cast round nose bullet.

We did have a 30-30 waiting in the wings  :).   The problem was we didn't have enough milk jugs...  ???  I can tell you from past experience a factory 30-30 170 gr JSP (remington) will get through 5.  Where it will stop I don't know.
