Yesterday Mel wanted to do some shopping, and pick up some rings she had resized at the jewelers, so I thought it would be good to get out and drop the hammer. I packed up a couple of AR's and headed to the gun club. When I got there I was the only one there, and had the whole place to myself. I set out some targets at 100 yards and loaded up a bunch of P-Mags with my handloads and let loose.
All in all I ran through about 500 rounds with both rifles, (a Bushmaster M-4, and a A-2 20" rifle). Both have factory irons on them, and after a little tweaking were both dialed in really well. I had no trouble keeping most all my shots in a 6" Shoot-N-C Target at that distance. After I got both guns sighted in I started in on the metal plates at 200 yards. I was ringing them consistently. It was easy to tell the hits from the misses. With a good hit you can see a line of dust in front of the plate as the bullet fragments. When you miss you get a cloud of dust from the direct bullet impact. I was getting consistent hits on the smallest plates, (8"), at 200 yards, which isn't bad for my 59 year old eyes.
About the only issue I have with irons is every now and then I have to take a break or my eyes get tired and I lose focus. But I really like the small aperture peep sights. I found if you slide your cheek down the stock far enough, you can close up the size of the aperture and get a really accurate sight picture. Irons will work well if the shooter does his part. Anyway, overall it was a good day.
Melanie gets sick from all of the solvent smell so I bought a collapsible card table and clean out in the garage. I've got everything out there including my air compressor, so it works out well. I've found that if you keep the bolt carrier group dripping wet, the dirt, carbon, and crud just wash right off. After a good blow job with the compressed air, and a relube, the guns were as clean as the day I bought them. Anyway, it was a good day so I thought I would babble about it.
