In the early days of the Republic.. (an observation)
« on: February 11, 2012, 10:40:06 AM »
In the early days of the Republic, the nomination process for office was a little less removed from the electorate..
To oversimplify, the first qualification for office seems to have been a lack of interest or ego to seek the office to be filled.. To ask for the job was an immediate disqualifier, because of the potential abuse of power that came with the office.
With the understanding that the quality of humility not being the same as self loathing, and that ego is not the same as a confident knowledge of the difference between right and wrong, the NRA Board of Directors election comes to mind..
I look at the ballot and see some names, industry leaders, that most of us here would recognize. Good people, all, I'm sure.. I see a potential for harm in that, too. There are people whose business, dreams and future rest on the favorable eye of the government for current and future contracts.. I don't mean to suggest that any of these people aren't committed to the 2A or RKBA. I just think that it puts them, and, in turn, us in a potentially bad position.
Also, the Board has a bit of a reputation, deserved or not, of "Fat-Cat-ism" and questionable political advocacy in their endorsements for public office. Harry Reid comes to mind here..
I could go on but you get the idea..

My reason for starting this is to suggest that the NRA, and all of us would be benefited by the nomination of and support for a member here, for a slot on the Board..
I have a couple of members in mind, but I want to see what kind of feedback this gets before I put them out there. I know that Michael Bane will be one that everybodys mind will go to. There are others as well..

Chew on this one over the weekend and I'll be curious to see what comes of this..
Thanks..
With friends like these, who needs hallucinations!..
