Book Review: Gun Digest of the Revolver
« on: July 07, 2012, 07:37:00 AM »
My wife got the new iPad (3) this year and she graciously shares it with me.  Since our local Borders closed, I thought I'd try an "eBook" and what better one to try than one on shooting.   Makes sense with my current fascination of revolvers that I'd read this one, which was available through the iPad/Kindle store.

Gun Digest(r) Book of the Revolver by Grant Cunningham

Grant is a pistol smith and shooter par excellence and his creds are attested to by none other than Massad Ayoob in the Forward.   I'm not that well read so his name wasn't familiar to me, but a little research showed that Mr Cunnningham ranks up there with the Askin's, Jordan's and Keith's.

This book is a general book on revolver handling.  And while some of the information is applicable to self-defense, that isn't the purpose.   The book covers every aspect of revolvers and makes a handy reference.   Especially for things like selecting speed loaders and maintenance.   Chapters include ones on, Why the Revolver, Sights and Sighting, Mastering DA, Reloading and Carrying.   (Warning to SASS shooters:  This book is only about double action revolvers ...  sorry.)

One especially enjoyable aspect of this book is that Grant doesn't take the "my way or no way" approach.   He does point out methods and choices that he thinks are best, but also presents other techniques and methods.  He acknowledges that some of these may work better for some people than others.

The few nits I have with the book are very small.  Things like not covering 9mm/10mm revolvers, or that the chapter on carrying concentrated mainly on concealed carry and could have used a lot more pictures.

All in all a very good book and a good reference.    I would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more about carrying and shooting revolvers.

And if you're wondering, I did enjoy reading the book on the iPad.  What I missed most was the fly leaf and the covers, and the pictures and info usually found there.   I also suspect a print version of this book may have had a few more pictures and illustrations.

Cool! Thank you for the review.  I'm a singla action revolver guy myself, but I might get this book just for the information.
