Target practice the other day...
« on: October 23, 2012, 07:07:00 PM »
So I'm out in the woods a while back and go to make some noise with the AR. The EOTech blinks off with the first round. I finish the mag with the BUIS that were already up and check the batteries.

Yep, FQ's post some time ago came back into my head - the batteries leaked.

Apparently 2 years is too long of a wait to change them out.
There wasn't any real corrosion but the contacts were starting to change color. I cleaned it up with some vinegar, rinsed with some alcohol and buffed the contacts with some fine sandpaper.
I now have replaced the alkalines with some lithium batteries. Rumor has it that the lithiums will shrug off recoil better. Dunno, but at least they're new...and yes the sight works fine.

If you have batteries in your sight, check them NOW!!
You can say lots of bad things about pedophiles; but at least they drive slowly past schools.

Always heard that a good rule of thumb is change them every year on your birthday.
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

"When it comes to the enemy, just because they ain't pullin' a trigger, doesn't mean they ain't totin' ammo for those that are."~PegLeg

Unless it's a gun you use (and check) every day then this is a reason why battery powered gizmos aren't always a good idea.

Will work for ammo

Back in June of 1980 I was down in Florida to watch and film a Space Shuttle Launch. (The fourth one). I was using 35 MM cameras back then, and forgot and left the Duracell Alkaline batteries in the power winder. I forgot about them until just a couple of years ago when I took out my camera equipment. The batteries had swelled, but leaked very little. Just a bit of corrosion around the contacts which came right off with a pen erasure. I loaded it up with fresh batteries and it ran like a champ. It wouldn't have mattered though as 35 MM cameras are like 8-Track tapes and flashcubes. All but totally obsolete.
