Open Carry/Concealed Carry/Open Carry.....
« on: October 20, 2012, 01:57:43 PM »
This is probably State specific, but if I have a CCW can I open carry with my jacket off, and then go concealed carry when I put my jacket back on without having a problem during the transition?  In other words, do you have to commit to one approach when you leave the house?  I went to the range wearing a jacket to conceal my pistol and took my jacket off at the range changing my approach from concealed carry to open carry.
I live in PA (not Phila) and was wondering if I am setting myself up for a problem if I go back and forth from concealed to open carry depending on how warm I feel with my jacket.  Thoughts?

That's a question for the PA Attorney General not DRTV!

Ask a lawyer, it will be state specific, here in NH I could, but some states don't allow open carry at all.

When you're on the range, it shouldn't be a problem, as everyone, by definition, is carrying openly. Anywhere else? Its a local thing. My advice is to keep it concealed. What the cops can't see, they can't hassle you about.

Learn the laws where you are at the time.  Each state has their own quirks and twists, so go the the Attorney General's information site and work out from there.  When in doubt, contact a local instructor and expand from there.

Generally a CCW license is for just that... concealed, and needs to stay concealed.  It usually does not apply to open carry, which will have it's own set of laws for your area.  For example, here in CA you cannot open carry even if you have a CCW license.  Your firearm must stay concealed.  Best to check with an attorney who is knowledgeable with the gun laws in your area.

I'd send an email to your state's Attorney General, and save the reply.  That way, if the advice they give you is wrong, you have something to fall back on that has the name of the .gov attorney who gave you the interpretation.

But then, I'm a cynic.  ;D
