Pistol Safe Question
« on: November 07, 2012, 04:51:34 PM »
I have just purchased my third pistol safe in 4 years.  My first one was a cheap no-name $55 digital key pad safe that broke one week after the warranty expired.  I liked the quick access, no key necessary option that this particular safe offered so I decided that my next safe would be similar but of better quality.  The next safe I purchased had much higher reviews and cost three times as much.  I purchased a “gun vault multi-vault deluxe”.  When I tried to get my pistol out of it last week, I heard the same dreaded noise the ‘el cheapo made when it went kaput.  I entered the code and heard a buzz but nothing happened.  Luckily both these safes had the back-up key option.  I retrieved my weapons and proceeded to take it apart to see what was wrong and whether or not I could fix it.  It turns out it was the same part that broke in both, a small thin metal wire that tugs on a spring that releases the latch when the code is entered.  I am relatively mechanically inclined but could not replace the wire in a capacity that made me comfortable enough to trust my life and that of my family’s with it.

So off to the internet I go to do research for my next safe.  I ended up settling on a Fort Knox Personal Pistol Box.  This one is the most expensive by far but has no real moving parts or electronics to fail.  It uses a “simplex” push button mechanical lock.  I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this safe or the overall durability of the simplex lock system.
