From a NSSF Action Alert:

Quote
The Manchin-Toomey Amendment, which is co-sponsored by anti-gun Sens. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Kirk (R-lll.), would effectively shut down all storefront National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks on weekends by requiring that gun show checks must be COMPLETED before any store check can be completed.

As noble as Gottleib's intentions are, there is a road to hell paved with plenty of good one's....Remember Hundreds Of MILLIONS of firearms did no harm to anyone today. They just collectively sat lightly oiled and happy.

They are already realizing it needs more "tweaking"....As there just isn't enough support...

Re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic didn't make much sense either.

“I agree: it’s not a perfect bill.” Second Amendment Foundation founder Alan Gottleib admits, referring to the Manchin-Toomey “compromise” on firearms background checks moving towards a Senate vote.
“But it gives us a chance to make gains we couldn’t make in ten years. Maybe not ever.” In a telephone interview with TTAG, Gottleib did his level best to “sell” the Manchin-Toomey bill to skeptical gun owners—who’ve grown increasingly dubious after The Volkh Conspiracy’s recent analysis. Gottleib’s read Kopel’s kvetch regarding provisions for federal gun registries and interstate firearms transportation. The SAF’s main man admits that the bill’s language leaves something to be desired. “We can tweak it after we pass it,” he asserts. “Everything can be fixed [in the House version].” Yes, well, what about that federal gun registry thing . . .

Gee,...where have I heard something like that before??????

I'm wondering if anyone's here has actually read the amendment. Instead of relying of some one else to tell them what to think. I'm die hard 2nd amendment but I get disgusted at the distortion's I hear sometimes. It's like people think it's okay to lie for a good cause. Remember Black Panther Bobby Rush's House Bill 486(or some such #) a bill that had no chance of making it out of committee. People acted like it was about the pass to ginn up money and support. Or the Senate Bill that had been dead for 10 years!!! People kept sending emails like the vote was tomorrow.
There are 3 people I trust not to have personal agenda's Paul Harvey, Tom Gresham, and Michael Bane.  Paul's dead, Tom's say's he's willing to trust Alan Goetllib and I'm still waiting for tomorrow to hear from Michael. I'm tired of being on the defensive hunkered in the bunker just saying no. I want us on the offensive fighting to get back our rights so that gun grabbers see any bill about guns as a slippery slope to us getting back our rights.

Yes TWillis, many have read the entire amendment. Here's the deal:

As A law abiding gun owner, why should I/You have to compromise/appease a damn thing...Hundreds of Millions of Firearms happily collected a lightly oiled bit of dust today, did not slay innocents or cause mass casualities.

The Manchin-Toomey proposal strikes/amends/edits/modifies existing laws, including you and your families right to a private conversations with your own Doctor. It effects Interstate transportation, it puts medical records, once considered a sacred oath
between patient/doctor priviledge, in the hands of the government.

Look at the Post Office, Social Security Admin, or any other gov. bureau.....Name me one that works on time and on budget.

I happened to be home sick today and turned to C-SPAN to watch what I thought was going to be debate on the M/T amendment.  Turns out that there was no debate but rather a few Senators (all Democrats) talking about how wonderful gun control could be.

One of those speaking today was Senator Durbin.  He started his speech by saying, "We are here today because of what happened in Newtown."  He then spent several minutes describing the evils of assault weapons, standard-capacity magazines, private transfers, and the gun culture in general.  He wrapped up by asking and then answering his own question, "Would this legislation have prevented what happened at Sandy Hook?  No... it would not.  The weapons used there were all legally purchased."

Do you recognize the contradiction?  The solution they are pushing - by their own admission - would do nothing to solve the problem they say they care so much about.

Anyway... if Schumer, Feinstein, and Boxer all say they like it, then I get VERY suspicious.  These career gun grabbers never support pro-gun legislation.

The only "Pro gun" legislation that could possibly be offered would repeal existing laws.

In full or will you accept a partial repeal?

Good.

I welcome small steps in the right direction too.
