Keeping Your Mouth Shut

My ol' daddy used to say, "If'n you don't know what you're talkin' about, it's best to keep quiet and be thought a fool....than to open one's mouth and prove it."

Keeping Your Mouth Shut

Sometimes its just best to keep your mouth shut. Too many times it seems that gun writers, firearms trainers and so called gun experts like to run their pie hole to put down a product, trainer or even another concept. I guess the thinking is that if they can talk bad about something then it makes them look smart.

First of all there is a difference in looking smart and being smart. My dad taught me that. He said, if you don’t know what you are talking about; keep your mouth shut. However, the human tendency is to be resistant to or negative about things we don’t understand.

The .300 Blackout cartridge is a perfect example. Some labeled it an answer to a question no one was asking right out of the gate. Others, declared it the answer to every ballistic question.

I was skeptical but reserved judgment until I’d had a chance to put the cartridge through an extensive test. I guess in the beginning it might have made me look not all that smart. After all, all the gun experts have been pontificating on the cartridge for more than a year now. My first print article on the .300 Blackout is due out in about two months. In summary, I was initially uninspired by the cartridge but after a thousand + rounds and a lot of handloading, I’m starting to see the light, its just not as bright as most folks claim.

What I’ve have learned is to keep my mouth shut until I have challenged my perceptions. --------------

Well, I didn't see any explanation about his thoughts on the .300 Blackout.

Did I miss them?

It has been said here before that the .300 Blackout is a good choice for an alternative cartridge in an AR that has been made to fire the .223, and not so hot otherwise.

Did the reviewer find otherwise?

His mentioning of the Blackout was merely used as an experience to explain (along with the other items) about how so many people speak up with advice about a particular subject, like an expert" (like interweb commandos, mall ninjas, tactards, etc), without any practical knowledge of that thing.

I swear the people who were promoting this thing were ex Earl Scheib executives. All it lacked was a Saturday morning infomercial.

I haven't shot one, but if it's bigger than .223, (yes I know it is ) it has to be a good thing if it is at all accurate .

I haven't shot one myself, but all that I've read about it says that it's a little less than an AK round..
So for the price of the AR, and the price of the 300 Blackout ammo, it seems a much better use of funds to pick up the AK and a case of Wolf..
I even saw an episode of Future Weapons where Mac said basically the same thing, (which I thought was kinda funny)..
With friends like these, who needs hallucinations!..

Point of the round is that if you  have an AR already and want it to shoot something better than the .223, the .300 Blackout is a good alternative...other than that application, there are other cartridges that fill it's niche outside the AR platform.

Isn't it also subsonic? So its geared for a suppressor? If not than I'm with Santa. For the price of an upper and spendy rounds, buy a decent AK and a case of Wolf and you're loads better off. Hell, you probably are even if it is, unless you're night hunting hogs or something.  But I really haven't followed the debate much as I have zero intention of owning a suppressor or a boutique round gun.
