Gunskins
« on: December 05, 2013, 02:13:16 PM »
Saw these advertised the other day on FB.

Anybody on here tried them?

Looks to be a good bit cheaper than camo dipping and you can do it yourself.
I doubt I'd want it on a handgun, but a hunting rifle or shotgun might be OK.

Personally, that's not something I think I'd ever do.  I'm a big fan of the natural wood and not a fan of the camo'd out look.  My hunting guns are like my truck:  They're not supposed to be pristine or in mint condition.  They're tools.  I take good care of my equipment and maintain it and don't intentionally go out and beat them up, but I also don't go out of my way to treat them like a piece of precious crystal.  Dings or scratches add character and bring up good memories.  Kind of like my face after almost 20 years of playing rugby.

What Ihprop1 said!  Scars are like tattoos, but they have better stories.

I have a camo shotgun, I have wood and blue, black and blue, black and SST.  Doesn't matter to me, and they are bought to be used.  I use my guns and they show it.  I'm not a sticker kinda guy.  I haven't hunted turkey yet, but I can't say that coyote or fox realize I'm using black, wood, blue and SST to shoot them.  I did not notice any change in success when my new shotgun was camo vs. the wood and blue it replaced.

The only thing I will say is that if you are going to go to this type of thing, go with the best you can get.  There is a reason that manufacturers use dip transfer and spray on vs. stickers.  Is sticker less?  I don't know, but I want to use my gun and don't want to mess with peeling stickers.

I had an old Winchester 1500 that I spray painted.  There's nothing worse than blowing your lungs out and working a flock of geese for 5 minutes and then getting busted at the last second by the sun reflecting off your barrel.  That sucker knocked more geese and ducks out of the sky than I care to count.

Sadly, she was the victim of our jonboat capsizing and now lies at the bottom of a river in southern MN.

For the record, I don't own any wood-stocked hunting rifles.... my wife has an old Remington 742 with wood furniture, but that is her business.  ;)

There are two dipping providers in my area and both are in the $150 range for a bolt action rifle.
Too costly for me.  :o

At just under $50, the Gunskins fills in the middle, but I was just wondering if anyone had applied it and could report as to the ease/difficulty of it and if it is easy to remove.

All my hunting rifles are utilitarian in nature and appearance, ie Browning A-Bolts with black composite stocks.
Nothing fancy here.
I have been toying with the idea of just spraying them.... either with Brownells Alumahyde or just use good ol' Krylon (like a good friend who used to do Duracoating as a business before realizing the Krylon did well enough for practical purposes).

I don't know.  After watching the video where you don't get professional adjustments and retouching I believe that the good old high quality rattle can or an airbrush would look better and last as long.

Anybody on here tried them?

The closest I've come to that is with the cheapo camo tape from the local gun store.
Used it on my AR and now the adjustable stock doesn't grab my mustache any more.  ;D
When I first looked at Gunskins (or similar product) they had precut the pieces for R handed shotguns but no lefties. Now that they have the customer cut it, I really like the idea!

My inherited gun has scratches that tell the story of an Old Man hunting the woods for decades. Those are the scars I want on it but I don't want to add any of my own...I want to keep it looking like I got it as a reminder of said Old Man.

Thanks for the link Peg.
