SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (ABC 4 News) - South Jordan officials decided to ban many toy guns in public places as a move to protect the public. But now, many who use toy guns as part of a game say the city is going too far.

The city voted to make carrying airsoft guns in public a crime, a Class B misdemeanor. Michael Johnson, who enjoys a good airsoft gun game, says, “I don't understand it. It's long range tag."

The ordinance applies to any device that can shoot a hard object, like a rock, a pellet or even a bean at least 25 feet. The problem, according to South Jordan's police chief, is that people are mistaking toy guns for real ones.

Within the last two months, city police responded to 25 incidents involving reported "weapons." In reality, 4 were air guns, 9 were b-b and pellet guns and the rest were paint guns or other similar devices. The president of Women Against Gun Control, Janalee Tobias who lives in South Jordan, says the new law is ridiculous.

“Playing cops and robbers is as American as apple pie and hot dogs. It’s sad our society has gone so far as to take away our kids fun," said Tobias.

William Johnson agrees. “These aren't dangerous weapons. It’s people who use them wrong and ruin it for everybody else."

Michael Johnson says, "Its just a trend to vilify guns and a lack of understanding."

Education, they say, would increase safety in the city. But this measure, they feel, goes beyond protecting the public.

Matt Smith says, “I think it's a little controlling.”

The police chief says that many complaints in the city have come from people whose property has been hit with paint gun pellets. Once the paint dries, it can be very difficult to remove, and their property is being damaged by the paint.

He says his officers will, at first, give out warnings to offenders unless they are repeat offenders. In that case, they can expect a ticket.

They're banning toy guns because of graffiti ... what about markers and spray paint?

Something that can shoot an object 25 feet or more ... how far from the back row of a classroom to the blackboard ... someone get to McDonalds and lock up all the straws (did you know that McDonalds has the largest diameter straw of all fast food places).

Sounds like the mommies that would not let their children play with cap guns are now in control.

When Marshal and I was in Missouri and we were just poking around in a an old five and dime store, there was a small boy about 6 years old.. he wanted a cap gun that used the roll caps. His mother( who was about 30) vehemently said NO.. he was NOT having any kind of gun..and she walked around the corner.. Well his grandma was standing there and she and I locked eyes..and I kinda sadly shook my head and sighed..and I walked by the little boy ( who was holding this gun and looking at it) and kinda ruffled his hair and smiled at him.. and then looked back at his grandma..
I moved down the aisle  and was looking at some things and she said.. " you can have the gun. " her daughter came around the corner and said,"No Mother.. he CAN NOT have the gun". I will not have any kind of gun in my house. "
The grandma looked at her and said.. "He can have the gun and play with it at my house and leave it at my house".
The little boy smiled so big at his grandma and his mom with that look of "can I for real have this?" look.
The young mother looked at her mother and said" well he has to keep it at your house"..
After the mother walked away.. I touched the grandma on the shoulder and said" good for you".
 She just smiled at me..

I bet that little boy will have the time of his life playing with his cap gun at his grandmas...

A few weeks ago we were out camping and Ashley my 6 yr old granddaughter was playing with her gun and the million of those &*%^$#@ caps..( you know the kind)  that you have to wind inside. She had shot everything in sight and looked up at me and said,
" Mee Maw? Don't you just love the smell of gun powder?"
;D  I just burst out laughing and said ' I sure do honey".. hahahaha

Mason. my 17 month old grandson was at my house the other day and our loading blocks were on the table and he saw them and so I gave him one with a few bullets and he had a great time 'loading and unloading " them. LOL

Gotta start them young...................... ;)

M'ette-

Actually studies show that when little boys are denied guns to play with like that, they usually just use sticks or the old thumb and index finger and go right on and play shoot em up anyway............... nature always finds a way! ;D

I guess Utah officials like a little cheese with their WHINE. Phil Grame was absolutely correct, when he said America has become a country of whiners.

A birth (actual) day in October? Christmas follows right behind, get one of the Mossberg 801 "Half-Pint" or Henry kids rifles for her, and she will literally grow up with it.

I recognize that pink pistol and holster!  The youngest has one.  She knows she is only supposed to point it at the target we have pinned up in her room.  Luckily she doesn't have any of the caps to go with it, otherwise we'd hear it all day long. ;D
