12 gauge ammo
« on: October 10, 2024, 03:23:25 PM »
I got some 12 gauge ammo today from Detroit Ammo Co. A 25 round box of Subsonic 00 Buckshot, with 12 pellets instead of the typical 8 or 9 in a 2 3/4" shell. And I got a 25 round box of Subsonic Sabot Slugs. Say that 3 times as fast as you can. ;)  They weigh 1 3/8 ounce, 601 grains, which is HEAVY for sabot slugs. Federal Power-Shok Sabot Slugs for example are 1 ounce, 438 grains. Despite being heavy, they're supposed to be Low Recoil, and so is the buckshot. At 2 bucks a pop I figured they were worth trying. The buckshot is in red Federal low-brass hulls, and the slugs are in blue Starline low-brass. I don't have a clue about who made the slugs but they have a shallow hollow-point shaped like an 8-pointed star. It looks like the head of a TORX fastener, but with 8 points instead of 6.

One of the boxes was starting to come apart at the seams and I had to tape it up. I thought they put the ammo in a torn-up box, but I just got off the phone with the president of the company and got the scoop on what's really going on. She said they had a new vendor make the boxes for the 12 gauge slugs and buckshot, 5.7mm, and one other caliber, I think it was 9mm. So, they're aware of the problem of the boxes being too flimsy for the weight, and they're working to fix it by getting better boxes. The slugs and buckshot were on back-order for quite awhile and when they packed it in these boxes they had to decide whether to ship it in crappy boxes, or make everyone wait a few more months until they get good boxes. I think they made the right decision. Most of us aren't collecting boxes, we just want the ammo. The shipping box didn't have any damage, and the boxes inside were surrounded by bubble wrap, but normal FedEx handling is enough for some of them to tear open. The rest of the the dozen calibers they make should be okay, and anything else that isn't their brand, unless other ammo companies got crappy boxes too. I just wanted to let everyone to know, in case you buy ammo in flimsy boxes too.

There is a lot of subsonic on their website.  I am looking towards some 5.7 but not subsonic...for me that's the point of 5.7.  Having velocity.

Next I need to replace a couple of hundred rounds of 50 BMG that went boom at OFASTS.  That ammo is also subsonic....SAY WHAT?  Mama don't like no subsonic and especially not at $7 a round.  Even with their discount it's $5.71+ a round and none of it linked.  Luckily I can link my own BUT still too pricey for me.  You can find, fairly easily, 200 unlinked rounds of 50 BMG for $800 or less brand new unlinked...less than $4 a round.

My Remington eats everything I've tried except rubber buckshot, which didn't have any noticeable amount of recoil. It works with light target loads, or at least some of them, so these should both work just fine. I think my VRF14 will work with them now that it's broken it. It has a heavy piston I've never used and a light piston that was in it when I bought it. Unless I buy a bunch of 3" magnum shells, which I can't use in the Remington, that's the way it's going to stay. I think deer season opens one month after this coming Sunday. It's been November 15 as long as I remember, and if I even have slugs or buckshot for my shotgun on me for the last half of November, I can get in serious trouble. You don't need to be caught poaching or anything, you're just automatically guilty if you don't have a license and the DNR can start confiscating things like your gun and your car. I have a small game license but don't plan on going anywhere in the next month to shoot. I don't know of any ranges that let you shoot buckshot, but slugs were allowed on the outdoor range at Williams as long as you didn't shoot the target frames or posts. Maybe next spring or summer I'll go out in the woods and see how they function.

I think they offer all that subsonic ammo just because everyone else doesn't. And any kind of specialty ammo I've seen is expensive. That particular niche doesn't appeal to me either.
