Children's and safety groups have renewed their call for tighter control over access to air guns following the death of a 13-year-old boy who was shot in the head with a pellet gun in Surrey, B.C.

The boy was shot in the backyard of a house in the troubled Whalley area while he was playing with another 13-year-old on Tuesday around 6 p.m. PT.

Carr said the other boy, also 13, is considered a suspect, and was questioned on Wednesday, but has since been released. Nobody has been charged in the case.

Emile Therien, president of the Canada Safety Council, said on Thursday that even stuffed toys are more carefully regulated than air guns.

"If you look at the number of products that are regulated under the Hazardous Products Act, [there are] flammability of children's clothing, lawn darts, plush toys," Therien said.

"There is absolutely no reason in the world why pellet guns or air guns should not fall under the purview of that act."

The Canadian Pediatric Society has said air guns and BB guns are dangerous weapons and should not be considered as toys for children or adolescents.

A nationwide policy regulating the sale and use of non-powder firearms is needed, it said.

What about the plastic bags that everything is shipped in, the pins used to hold my shirts together in shipping, steak and cooking knives, glass that is sharp when broken, pop cans with sharp edges when opened, and bicycles you can fall off of???

Well ... wrap me in bubble wrap, and feel good about it  ;)  Don't forget to poke breathing holes in the wrap before you wrap me.

Of course they would. They have to pay for your health care.
Anti: I think some of you gentleman would choose to apply a gun shaped remedy to any problem or potential problem that presented itself? Your reverance (sic) for firearms is maintained with an almost religious zeal. The mind boggles! it really does...

Me: Naw, we just apply a gun-shaped remedy to those extreme life threatening situations that call for it. All the less urgent problems we're willing to discuss.
