CCW sticky situations

Gday All

ok  as I am over here in the cotton wool Island, and not being allowed to carry or own a firearm for self defense as that is what the Police are for as we are not able to look after our selves  ::) 

as I have know I dear what it is like over in the USA ( I have never been over seas )

I was wondering here if anyone has had the need to use there CCW firearm while out somewhere, a home in a self defence situation, or anything else where you have needed to use your firearm in an actual defense

I would be sure it is the last thing anyone would want to do however as there is a lot of crap about the place I was just wondering what it is like over there   ( Hope I explained my self enough)

Philw,
     First, ignore anything you see on this topic on television, either news or entertainment.  They do not reflect reality.  The major news outlets only report sensational cases and tend to ignore or minimize most self defense cases.  Several studies have been conducted, some by anti-gun organizations, which report that firearms are used in the US approximately 2 million times annually for self defense and that so-called "gun control" laws have no significant impact on crime.  The vast majority of those uses do not involve shooting the gun, but simply displaying a firearm often dissuades criminals from continuing their activities at that moment. 
     I've personally displayed a handgun in a defensive situation many times, discharged it twice, but that is because of my career as a police officer.  Off duty I've displayed a pistol twice in self defense, and since retirement I haven't been in a situation that has required self defense.  As a retired police officer in Oregon, state law allows me to carry concealed, no permit required, as long as I have my police credentials with me.  I am certified under federal law to carry in all US states, but so far my domestic travels have only included the western US and Alaska.

I thought it was closer to 4 million uses annually but most are never reported so it's hard to say.

I used a gun once to defend myself when a convicted felon threatened to shoot me. Then he called the cops and played the part of the victim, while I got my gun confiscated, was fined and put on probation. He knew how to play the system and I don't.

The only time I even though I was going to have to use a gun in self-defense was a couple weeks ago when a 1300 lb. angus cow threatened to flatten me, but I think that it is excellent preventative medicine.

PhilW, I have only drawn twice in the 25 years I've been carrying, Once on a sheriff's deputy ( out of uniform ) and he was very understanding, and once on someone, who it turned out, came to my business to use my dumpster to kill some pit bull puppies, he could not give away, and throw them away, the pistol came out when he let his adult pit bull out, and that is a good scenario to put by the Best Defense, it was very hairy for about a minute. NO SHOTS FIRED.  I have had my pistol drawn a few times when things were not right, and on one occasion thwarted a break in, but the would be burglar, could not see me, only heard me and decided to leave.

that has helped me over here understand a little more about why I here Michael and others via podcasts and on line go on about it all the time 

as it is a little new and foreign to me.

caus as you know we over here are not allowed to carry

The reason a self defense SHOOTING often makes the news is because it is relatively rare, usually just the realization that the potential victim is NOT defenseless is enough to prevent bad things, as Pioneer said, about 2 million times a year, that number by the way shoots a hole in the Anti's arguments . Originally some one from NRA had said that defensive use occurred more than ONE million times per year, The Clinton administration in their quest for gun bans said that was not correct, that was ridiculous, So they had the Justice Dept. under Janet" fry a kid" Reno investigate. They found out  NRA WAS wrong, the number was by their own standards closer to 2.5 million. Many incidents go unreported so the commonly accepted statistic is between 2 and 3 million. I saw a post some where that there about 30,000 "Gun related deaths per year in the US of those about half are suicide, the rest include all type of accidents,  police shootings, and murders so far less than 1 half of 1% of defensive uses actually require a shot to be fired.
