Another Book Thread

If I missed it in the search, my apologies for covering it again....


I was in the book store yesterday, looking for a book on survival.  Les Stroud's "Survive!" looked pretty interesting.  Does anyone have any thoughts on that particular book, or any suggestions on other books on survival?

If you've never read LUCIFER'S HAMMER, it's a must...my favorite "big rock falls out of the sky" book and much better than either ARMAGEDDON or DEEP IMPACT, the two "big rock falls out of the sky" movies from a few years back:

I highly recommend Les Stroud as a survival expert. He is down to earth, practical and not a goof ball preparing for a super volcano to explode in Yellowstone or UN Blue helmets to take over America. His TV series is excellent in conveying the most important factor in survival, "ATTITUDE". A positive can do attitude will help immensely in getting you thru difficult situations wether small or large. I would recommend recording all his TV episodes. He has numerous tips and techniques on it. One of his TV shows was on urban survival like in Katrina. Refer back to book frequently.

Read up on survival by reading books where folks actually got thru difficult situations. I really enjoyed Dougal Robertson's "Survive the Savage Sea". See again how being creative and determined added extra days to the life of numerous folks caught up in circumstances. Check out Doug Ritters website. He is also down to earth and authenic.

Don't forget a real basic. The Boy Scouts handbook. If your interested sign up for some basic classes at the Red Cross. You are more likely by orders of magnitude to encounter medical emergencies for yourself and loved ones than getting out of a tropical jungle or artic tundra.

I have three of Tom Brown's field guides and I love them!

The field guide to Wilderness survival is my top choice as it gives good all around information for very rustic survival.  It has everything from shelter to fire to edible plants to hunting and trap building.

His other two book build of the first.  They are
 field guide to Nature Observing and Tracking
and field guide to Wild Edible and Medicinal Plants
