Col. Jeff Cooper question
« on: December 09, 2007, 02:47:11 PM »
Hey everyone I am new to civilian shooting and have a Kember Desert Warrior. This is my first 1911 pistol and only my second firearm ever. I bought a Glock 19 for my first but was very familier with it before I ever bought one. Now back to my question I would love to read all the things that Col. Cooper wrote about 1911's and about all his defensive pistol teachings. Where can I find these writings? I have searched, but all I seem to find is just biographies about him. i am ashamed that I didn't know about him or found out about this great man while he was alive. I have a dream to go to Gunsite the first chance I get. Just need the money. The 250 class should just be taught in high school. After all I did in the military and fighting I participated in over in Iraq really does not apply to civilian self defense or ccw. Some things cross over, but I have no tread to many stories about a self defense act that included kicking in a door and clearing a building, or driving in a car unloading 400 rounds into an ambush from an appartment complex. But at least I know I can do it. Haha!!!

Thank you and I hope to meet more people like you all at the ranges.

I'm sure Michael Bane can stear you in the right direction but I know I found some at gun shows in the used books and at some shows there are people who sell new books.  I'm sure others on the forum can too.  Good luck.

I recommend _To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth_ as the book to start with when it comes to reading Cooper.  This collection of essays on weapons, their use, and the combat mindset remains fresh and informative although they are all now twenty to thirty years old.  Cooper, as a writer, has the gift of clarity and insight that few modern writers possess.  I bought my copy of the book in the early '90s, and it has been my constant companion ever since.  I come back to it often to remind me how important it is to be direct and clear in one's purpose.

Check JeffCooperBooks.com, Paladin Press, and the Gunsite Pro-Shop for the books.  Cooper's Commentaries may be seen at  thesconce.com.  The Gunsite Pro-Shop also has the Mental Conditioning for Combat video, which is the old "Wednesday Afternoon Lecture" from the 250 course.  They're all worth the time and money to go through.

Another excellent video from Morris Video is Jeff Cooper's "Handgun Fundamentals" (sometimes marketed as "Handgun Safety"), that was sold for some years as an NRA publication.  Copies of this turn up on eBay from time to time.  That video includes safety ("The Four Rules"), action types, grip, stance, sight picture, trigger control, maintenance (he cleans his old Pachmayr Combat Special in this section), and shooting demos by The Colonel, Robbie Barkman, and Clint Smith.  Very valuable information-briefing, densely packed into 55 minutes.  I've never seen so much basic pistol information compressed into such a short demonstration anywhere else - even at API (and Gunsite)!

Hope this helps!
