Metro officer kills suspect, wounds bystander on jogging trail near Rice

HOUSTON -- A Metro police officer shot and killed a suspect and wounded an innocent bystander on the jogging trail that circles Rice University Tuesday morning, according to a Metro spokesperson.

It happened near the intersection of Main and University.

The bullet apparently went through the suspect and hit an unidentified woman, according to the preliminary report Houston Police Department.

She was taken to an area hospital. Her condition isn't known.

The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.

A Rice University spokesman said the Metro officer witnessed an altercation between the suspect and a woman at the light rail stop near Dryden and Main.

Preliminary HPD reports said the woman was stabbed.

The suspect took off on foot and the officer chased him and shot him.

It's not clear if the woman who was hit by the bullet is the same woman the suspect had argued with.

The case will be investigated by the Houston Police Department Homicide Division.

Main was shut down after the shooting causing a major traffic jam in the area.

Funny story. When he ran for president for about 10 minutes in 2000, NPR had a guy following him around. He'd just come from a republican gathering were he'd caught holy hell for being pro-choice. They arrived at the local airport, where a guy walks up to him and says, probably for the 1st time in his life outside of Pa., "Hey, aren't you Arlen Spectere?" He, feeling flattered, says yes. The guy then says "Ok Mr. Majic Bullet, how dow do you explain......" The tirade went on for a while, at which point Spectere turns to he NPR guy and says, "I'm not going to win this thing, am I?
