They're both NICE guns. In the two we have, I think the 686 really is the more crisp, more smooth piece. If I had to take only one of them with me into close combat though, it would be the Ruger because it could double as a club.

We went down to the shop today and visited with the new revolver. We shot it on the range and ran about 70 rounds through it. My wife really likes it and so do I. It shoots very well, has long somewhat heavy DA trigger pull to get used to, but once you get used to it it is easy to overcome.
