Having lived well into the automatic rifle ages (he past on in 2006), his "ultimate firearm" was a bolt rifle.  Hmmmm.


Designed by Mr. Cooper in 1997 for Steyr.  Yes, his chosen caliber was .308.

No big surprise that he favored a bolt rifle. It's all about accuracy.

Thats only a 2.5 power Leupold that he outfitted the rifle with.  I'd have thought a variable, or a 4X myself.

Read up on the history of the "Scout Rifle" concept....

I love the Scout Concept and I love steyr rifles (My SSG PIIk is beloved, anyway...).

The Steyr Scout failed to meet the criteria and is notoriously unreliable with surplus .308 (primers are too hard for teh weak spring which was part of the short throw design.). I've owned two of them and built my own Scout on a Rem 700. The latter has killed quite a few deer and other assorted game/varmints. The Steyr I kept is signed by the Colonel and doesn't see much use.  I don't know if anything "official" was ever put out, but I have to think, at least behind closed doors, he was disappointed with the final product from Steyr.

i tried my buddies styer at the range and found that it was hard to acquire a site picture with this big head of mine. maybe im too used to the AR platform but i had to bend my head sideways to see the target.
