I really don't mean to be a cantankerous sort here, but at least from the articles I read online about this whole SEALs debacle was that the SEALs actually exercised their military rights by refusing some form of NON-judicial punishment, and instead decided to push it up to the court martial level.

This is what they wanted.  That is what they are going to get.  In my opinion, it really isn't up to me to go against their wishes.

They wanted their day in court.  I think they also wanted to play to the emotions of the US public and try their case in the court of public opinion.

Again, in my opinion, the raghead's fat lip is kind of a red herring.  If I understand the news articles correctly, they are under so much heat now because they lied about it and conspired to try  to cover it up.

In my opinion, if they are such manly men and expouse any Honor as American Fighting Men, then the adult and righteous thing for them to have done was to have fessed up to it right away:   "Yessir! I gave Muhammed Sheik Mu-Goatlover a fat lip, and I would do it again under the same circumstances."  Taken their punishment like men.  Saluted smartly and carried on.

The similarities between this case and the case of the two Border Patrol agents who shot the Mexican drug dealer in the butt are not lost on me.  A person could also view this SEALs incident similar to the Lt. Calley and My Lai incident as well...especially considering how screwed up the ROE, just like in Vietnam, is now over there in Iraqi-stan.   ::)

Ultimately it will be either up to a military judge or a jury of military officers to decide their guilt or NON-guilt for the charges and specifications against them, which will hopefully be based on the facts and not the emotions surrounding this incident.

I do think there is way, WAY! more to this story than what is being told to us in the papers.  Consequently, I am not interested in signing a petition at this time.

If there appears to be some shenanigans going on with the UCMJ  and/or courts martial process, then, YEAH! you bet!  I will be right up there signing a petition.  And writing my Congresscritters. And passing the hat for an appeal/defense fund.

You are correct that they chose the CM rather than admitting their guilt which is what the lesser punishment would have been.  This way they get a hearing and proper representation.

Actually, if you do just a wee bit more reading, you will find that this is punishment for the entire SEALs organization, another example of an uber-lib (fancy term for commie) Prez hating the military and having a tantrum.

Read up on the latest info coming out of the rescue mission of the US ship's captain from the Somali pirates. Remember after the three pirates got whacked, the WH went into overdrive declaring that bho had given the order, to strike at the pirates? He didn't. The Bainbridge's captain, operating until unbelievable ROE took the initiative and gave the go-ahead to the SEALs to take the shot.

These charges are the WH's message to the SEALs and anyone else that you do not make the WH look bad. That is, it is a political attack, not for cause. If the case doesn't fold, I would hope it to be minimal at best. Of course, the military leadership is becoming politicized as well, so maybe not. And that is why I signed the petition.
