Do you have a yeast infection??? The Atkins diet revisited
« on: February 03, 2010, 10:10:17 AM »
Hi all,

I was on the Atkins diet once back in about the 2003 or 2004 timeframe.  I can't remember now exactly how much weight I had dropped in the first two weeks alone.  It was either 12 or 21 pounds.  I started at about 230 ish and by the time I went to a class reunion in the fall of 2004 I was down to about 180-ish.  I was at about a 32% body fat level, and  I dropped to under 19% body fat.

So, now that I am a weight that is....well...annoying and uncomfortable, I have decided to try the Atkins diet again.

I have borrowed the book on the Atkins this time around, and it has been, in my opinion, quite an educational read.

What was surprising to me was that even us men can get yeast infections in our intestinal tracks.  We can get them elsewhere too...  :o

Medically speaking a yeast infection is called candidasis.

You can read up on it here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candidiasis

One of the causes for the yeast to bloom inside your gut is that you have been on anti-biotics pills.  The anti-biotics kill off the bacteria that the yeast competes against.  Since there is no more competition for the yeast, a bloom occurs.

This all relates to dieting in that you might have cravings for sweets.  Yeast loves sugar or sweets.  So in turn, you might not be able to lose weight.

Dr. Atkins goes on to speculate some other things in his book...maybe some are a little tin foiley-ish...but still very plausible.

To be blunt, the American Medical Association isn't all that and a bag of chips, in my opinion.

I did the Atkins thing a few years ago and dropped about 125 pounds.  I was averaging just OVER a pound a day of weight loss.  The problem I had long-term was that I got really tired of eggs, cheese and meat.  While I love all 3 of them, I also like bread, pasta, etc.  In short, I love food.

I'd like to find a plan that would allow me to follow it long term.  I'm tired of the yo-yo syndrome.

This can be offset with real yogurt and Kefir, Active Cultures and Probiotics, Bulgariuis, Acidolpholus, and others. Might be misspelled, but the big thing is:

For every action, there is a re-action.  Nutritionally, the dieting body reacts like an alcoholic who stops drinking cold turkey, some can get through it, some have their bodies "freak out" and yeast infections, and other symptoms are a result.

If you doing any type of dieting, maintaining balance to the nutritional requirements of your body is very important.

All the old cliche's drink water, see a doctor, nutritional specialist, who ever, ..... do some research and do it right.

I am not a dieting expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express, and my wife is a nurse, cancer survivor, herbalist, homeopathic expert, for over 30 years.

Good luck and Be Well.

That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

Mark.. my ex is on Atkins *again* right now. He lost about 70 # on it the first time.. about 90# on it the 2nd time..and we'll see on this time around. He also quit smoking and drinking beer ( beer is temporary) LOL  .. (( its pretty safe to tell you that he is like a coiled rattlesnake.. ))  Glad I have my own house to escape to..  ;D

But he is using Atkins to get the initial weight off ( and lower his BP and Cholesterol ) then try to add the carbs back in ..but summer is coming so we will see how long this lasts.. ::) The good part of Atkins is ..it works.. The bad part of Atkins is you can't do it forever...eventually you start to eat "normal" and it all goes back on..

My family celebrates everything with food beer and whiskey..and country music. Its tough ..but hopefully he will hang in there long enough without killing someone to get some off..

As someone who is trying to go the other way (I'm on meds that make it hard for me eat more than a very small portion without feeling nauseous), my doc put it in very simple terms "excersize more, eat more". I you case it would be "excersize more, eat less", though you may not see a poundage drop as muscle weighs more than fat. Still if you go by the body fat index, a 4 mile run a low alchohol, low carb and high protien routine seems hard to beat.
FQ13 who is eating an MD reccomended scoop of Blue Bell (and that's not a joke) :-\ I've dropped sixty pounds in a year and its not a good thing.

I wish I was so skinny I rattled when I walked.. and that I HAD to eat!
God I love to cook and eat.. Eating makes me so happy.. hahaha
But I understand that if it makes you sick to eat..then that wouldn't be a good thing..
Maybe you could give me a little of that .. then I wouldn't crave those damned Potato Chips all the frickin' time. !!

The easyest way to lose wiegth is changing when you eat.  If you will make your 1st meal of the day your largest, it will give you a chance to burn it off.  That or become a deamon in the sac.

I still crave the chips M'lette, I just can't eat more than a handful. The irritating thing is that every prepared frozen food brags about how few calories it has. Me, I want a small portion with a thousand or better. Low fat? That's a dime a dozen. I need super extra-concentated ultra-fat. I probably am unique in having a doc that reccomends potato skins and chile cheese fries. :-\ It sounds stupid, but it is a PITA.
