I'm 800 or so pages into the book (first time) so I'm almost there, but these people are going to be making a few bucks from me pretty soon.

One could fairly claim that Atlas shrugged because the damn book was too heavy, but its still a must read. ;D Although, I must warn you about The Speech. 54 pages of soliliquy, c'mon Ayn, how do you REALLY feel? A great read and much better than the Fountain Head. Check out Anthem as well. Same point, about 150 pages. When you're done, hit J.S Mills On Liberty. Its free on line and hits the same basis without all the baggage.

I went on a shopping spree at Barnes and Nobles a couple weeks ago, I know, nerd, and I picked up Atlas Shrugged and Fountain Head.  Finishing some H.G. Wells and I'll be moving on to Rand.

All this unabashed consumerism and capitalism makes me sick.  I just may throw up my BHO kool-aid...

FQ, She was Russian, they ALL write like that. It's why I will never read either of them unless I'm marooned on a desert island with nothing else.
It takes longer to read War and Peace than it did to fight the damn war.

That was one of Rand's main problems (the other being her somewhat "unconventional" sex life, not a problem in itself, just that she kept trying to justify it in her philosophy). She was a White Russian and hated the Reds with a firey passion. I won't argue, but she did have a bit of trouble seperating the personal from the political. There are far worse sins, but it did let folks dismiss her through pschoanalysis a lot more easily than they would have if she was a bit less auto-biographical. The whole Dagny, Galt, D' Anconia love triangle? There is such a thing as TMI Ayn. ::)  ;D

Prudish societies tend to generate that sort of thing.  Look at the 1800's, they would not say "legs" as that was to suggestive, so they said "limbs" instead, but even swilling down Laudanum didn't keep half of them from being psychotic.

I don't disagree, hell, I'm sure the wolf-man myth came fom all the hairy palms. ;D Still, the closet rape fantasies (Roarke and the fireplace in Fountain Head etc.), gender politics, an unconventional view of marriage,a refusal to let individualism include gender equality etc. These she never explained, yet still inserted it, and it weakened her overall case and let her be nibbled to death by ducks rather than forcing her critics to address her arguments head on. Its sad, but she was dismissed not so much for her arguments, as for her gender as it was an easier target in the times.
FQ13 who is not a sexist on this issue, and has learned that sometimes you win an argument not by having the last word, but by knowing when to shut up and hand your opponent more rope.

I thought about placing this link:  http://howtogogalt.com/  in the politics section under a new heading but, not wanting to beat this 'Atlas' thing to death, changed my mind.

There are some interesting ideas about "starving the beast(looters)" including ' not watching TV'...........which may not go down well with our esteemed leaders here  :), I don't think I'm strong enough to take many of the more radical ideas on board - but then again if I produced any less it would have to be in the exhaling and defecating department  :-\
Best Wishes, Mike.
