Latest (May 12) on Gun Show Loophole (sic)

Got the latest Brady Bunch letter for money and they're talking up the Gunshow Loophole bill, HR2324.Actually it's titled: Gun Show Loophole Closing Act of 2009.)    I thought I'd share.

It's still in committee, sub-committee actually.  It was introduced and referred to House Judiciary Committee on 5/7/2009 then to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security on June 12th.  For a bill with 100 co-sponsors it has had surprising lack of action, though the recent committee meeting on the NYC bombing has brought it back up to light.

With it's somewhat vague exceptions, this bill stands some chance of passing.   However, HR2324, like the other more onerous bills, is an infringement on FIRST amendment protections of free assembly and serves no other purpose than to make gun ownership more difficult and to harass and ensnare legal gun owners.

This bears watching in the next couple of weeks.   As I've said before some of these "loophole" bills are really there just to serve as trading fodder for outlawing all private (non-FFL) transfers.

Oh, and here's Brady Bunch's latest appeal.   Don't their supporters get tired of the "donate, donate, donate" mantra?

Yes by all means spend more money on a futile effort. As Alf says, even if this thing passes, it will have three major hurdles to overcome.
1) An expanded, though not yet defined, view, of the 2A.
2) The idea that this regulates interstate commerce with a Court that has four members who are opposed to extending this power.
3) The 1A right to freedom of assmbly.
I'm not complacent by any means, just more skeptical of this thing's ability to hold water in court than I would have been 10 years ago. Anyway, I encourage antis to give all the money they save by boycotting Starbucks to the Brady Bunch (they'd just hurt themselves with it otherwise ). It will help, really, because I can't imagine a Democratic Congress critter from a red or purple state that desires anything more that a controversial vote on gun control during an election year.
