GSSF shoot review
« on: August 18, 2010, 01:35:32 PM »
Sunday I got out early (for me) to shoot the Glock Sport Shooting Association local match. I've never bought a Glock, so I borrowed a friend's Gen1 Glock 17 (9mm). It's a match designed for non shooters. The match is designed where accuracy is more important than speed, but I can't shoot that way well. I came in 50th out of 92. The friend I went with came in 24th, and shot twice as well as I did.

I just can't warm up to Glocks.  The trigger pull is long and the break mushy.  The sights are poor.  The grip is too large for my small hands; I just can't get a solid grip (which is weird, as the double stack Para 1911 feel fine).  The mag release button jabs into my trigger finger (lefty).  I am surprised how poor my groups are with it.  I bet my sub-compact 1911 45acp would shoot tighter groups for me.

Back to the shoot: it's very well run, and perfect for the urban couple who bought a Glock for home/condo defense but have never taken it out of its box.  They explain range and safety procedures.  You start all your strings from a low ready position so no drawing is required.  The match is setup for 10 round magazines.  There's no movement.  All stages are done under a tent with wood walls between you and other shooters.

My comment afterwards was that I wished I could shoot the match with a non-Glock.  I know the stages are borrowed from Steel Challenge, and modified for paper.

Overload you are right, the match was designed around a person off the street with a Glock in a box, and be able to compete, it is not easy though, yes it is accuracy oriented, which I like, the scoring system is extremely fair, you could not sand bag this match if you tried. Only the best competitors compete head to head, the rest come in where they come in, 50th could win you a gun as easy as 26th, but you can't plan that, plus all the other smaller classes, Senior, compact, subcompact, Junior even. We have a local competitor Bryan Wilhite, won more than any other and now cannot win guns anymore, He is awesome, he was sponsored by Glock for a while, but is master class and they only shoot for a little money, 100 bucks, because Glock tries to keep it more than fair. It is an entry level match that I have RO'd at least 10 times, won some money and 4 Glocks. best I ever did was 1st A class, which means 2nd, 1st is the champion who gets the gun. But gets moved up a notch. I won all my Glocks in the RO drawings after the match. Yes I have been Lucky.

I too shot the GSSF match in Greeley. Friendly RO's, all focused on safety, and wonderful weather made for a great day. I've shot GSSF matches since 1992. Over the years, I've seen first timers and I've seen all the major professional shooters playing in the game. What I like about GSSF is that the format allows for you to measure yourself match to match. Because the stages are virtually the same at every match, you can more accurately measure your own improvement. In this match I shot a 70.75. In my last match I shot an 80. I improved because I deliberately focused on shooting accurately while maintaining a speed in which I could maintain my accuracy. We love GSSF. Our family members have received 11 guns and two Savings Bonds over the years from winning divisions or from luck of the draw.  As for not shooting a GLOCK well. It's like anything you do part time. You don't do it as well as when you do it full time. You can't miss fast enough to win a GSSF match.
