FTA..  http://www.adn.com/2010/07/30/1388526/man-who-killed-bear-in-denali.html

"Fister said the area where the shooting took place is known to have a lot of bears. She said the couple was hiking when the man heard a noise in the brush. He turned, drawing his .45-caliber, semi-automatic handgun from a holster on his waist moments before a large grizzly bear emerged and charged the woman.

The man fired seven to nine rounds, stopping the bear. The couple then notified park officials.

Rangers found the bear dead the next day. It was a 434-pound male."

Maybe not a 1911 but it appears to be a .45 ACP...  My 1911 carries 8 +1..

Well, we know it wasn't a Glock because I can guarn-damn-tee you he didn't stop shooting until it was empty. ;D

Now, if they were out with Kodiak weighing 1500 pounds, I don't think I'd be carrying a .45, I'd be carrying something like an RPG...

I took a 590 when I went to Admiralty Island. It really wasn't enough gun, but it sure felt good, and the ghost rings were reassuring. Still, a .375 or .458 would have been mo better.FQ13
