Holster Inspection
« on: February 12, 2011, 10:36:29 AM »
Was performing a little firearm Spring cleaning and inspected a couple of my holsters. Not sure if the topic had been posted before? Checked for cracks in leather, release buttons not functioning correctly or coming loose along with normal wear and tear. I decided to put this up as a poll to see what you think.

Worth doing. I was putting Mink Oil on my boots and decided to hit my el cheapo, but much loved Galco IWB while I was at it. Turns out the clip was coming lose from thre leather. I would never have noiced it if I hadn't been rubbing in oil until it came loose leaving me with a holstered gun in my hand during a draw. Oops! :o I have ordered a Don Hume to replace it and will post a range report, but I agree with Ping, do routine  maintainence inspections on your holsters just liked your gun lest you get an unpleasant surprise. :-\

Every time the holster goes on it gets inspected, as does the gun it carries!

I could answer several ways.
I have been using a SERPA for over two years and just bought a second one for another gun. I check the three screws that adjust the holster angle (and also attaches the belt loop attachment) about once a month for tightness. The retention mechanism gets used at least once per day.

When I only used (and if I do use) leather holsters, they got a once-over when I put them on for loose threads...and if it had a thumb-break, the snaps got checked.

I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

I mainly use Blackhawk Serpa Holsters but also have a Blackhawk shoulder rig. They are easy to check out. I have a wonderful Galco leather holster that I rarely use but has held together very well over the years. The Fobus I use for my G30 is getting a little worn. Going to have to start pinching pennies to save for a new holster for it.

Being that I live in a mostly non-carry state (CA), I don't have a lot of occasion for holster wear. Now that my parents have moved to a state that I do have a permit for, I'm starting to put a little wear on the Galco FLETCH. I've always checked screws on my Fobus Evo holster before comps.

I've replaced Uncle Mike's neoprene IWB holsters, just because over time (8 to 10 years), the neoprene breaks down into powder.

I answered weekly, but it's probably closer to a couple of times a week.  My current employment doesn't allow me to carry as much as I would prefer; so, I don't carry everyday.

My primary carry holster is a Crossbreed SuperTuck Deluxe (which is awesome by the way) that carries both my Glock 19 and 26 equally well.  I have to admit that I don't inspect it everytime I put it on, but I pick it up and look it over several times a week.  I never really thought of it as an inspection, but I guess that's actually what I've been doing.

I also have an Aholster pocket holster (also very nice) for my 26 that serves as more of a "home" for it when it's not in the Crossbreed. It also get's used when I don't want to put on the larger holster and just throw the gun in a coat pocket or pants' pocket.  It gets the same treatment as the other holster, but there's not much that can go wrong with it.  It's simply a single piece of kydex folded over and molded to fit the gun.

Sorry, I didn't mean to give such a long answer to a simple question.
